Daily MaverickParliament shines a spotlight on Kirstenbosch’s declineSouth Africa's Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and Environment summoned the South African National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi) to address severe operational declines at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Sanbi admitted to significant challenges, including dying plant collections, unfunded conservation strategies for confiscated succulents, and infrastructure backlogs, while facing scrutiny over revenue reinvestment and staff vacancies.Daily MaverickWatch – Is Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden dying from the inside?Former volunteers and specialists at South Africa's Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden describe a deepening institutional crisis, with specialist positions unfilled, skilled volunteers departed, and procurement processes so bureaucratic that basic supplies like pots and soil take months to arrive. The garden's greenhouses are overwhelmed with approximately half a million confiscated poached plants—mainly rare succulents—arriving as evidence but lacking the space, expertise, and resources for proper care, with many dying as a result. Critics blame the SA National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), which administers the gardens, for prioritizing administrative compliance over plant conservation and for cancelling a membership perk that drove away the Botanical Society of South Africa's volunteer workforce.Daily MaverickWhy biodiversity is becoming a core economic and investment issueBiodiversity conservation is shifting from a government responsibility to an economic and investment imperative, driven by the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and growing recognition of nature's economic value. South Africa's National Biodiversity Assessment 2015 reveals that nearly half of the country's ecosystem types are threatened, while ecosystem services contribute at least R275-billion annually to the economy (approximately 7% of GDP). The South African National Biodiversity Institute is working to support corporate nature reporting through biodiversity data platforms and frameworks such as the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures, though adoption remains early-stage.South Africa TodaySANBI re-accredited as National Implementing Entity for the Adaptation Fund in South AfricaThe South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) has been formally re-accredited as South Africa’s National Implementing Entity for the Adaptation Fund, extending its accreditation for five years until January 2031 following a comprehensive assessment by the Fund’s Accreditation Panel. Since its initial accreditation in 2011, SANBI has mobilised nearly USD 10 million in Adaptation Fund resources supporting ecosystem-based adaptation projects in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and the Northern Cape, and is currently designing two further projects worth a combined USD 30 million. The re-accreditation reinforces SANBI’s position within the international climate finance landscape and underpins its accreditation as a Direct Access Entity with the Green Climate Fund, whose USD 40 million Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction project was approved in July 2025.
