Descriptiontext

The Center for Biological Diversity is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit environmental advocacy organization founded in 1989 and headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, with offices in 18 additional locations across the United States and one in La Paz, Mexico. It pursues biodiversity protection, endangered species conservation, climate action, public lands preservation, environmental health, and energy justice through a combination of strategic litigation under statutes including the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and NEPA, alongside grassroots mobilization campaigns. Its programmatic portfolio spans ten areas: Carnivore Conservation, Climate Law Institute, Endangered Species, Energy Justice, Environmental Health, International, Oceans, Population and Sustainability, Public Lands, and Urban Wildlands.

The organization does not develop proprietary technology products; its core 'product' is its website (biologicaldiversity.org), which functions as a hub for conservation content, action alerts, membership management, and donation processing, supplemented by the branded publication The Revelator and multiple email newsletters. Revenue is raised primarily through individual donations and memberships on a tax-deductible basis (EIN 27-3943866), with supplementary foundation and institutional grants; suggested donation tiers of $15 and $50 are presented online and a more structured membership ecosystem supports a donor list described as numbering over one million. The organization is governed by a Board of Directors and operates on a non-distribution charitable basis, with no parent company, holding entity, or institutional investor ownership.

The Center's customers are environmentally motivated individual donors and supporters, mobilized through email action alerts, petitions, and volunteer engagement. It pursues strategic alliances via co-plaintiff litigation with organizations including Friends of the Everglades, Appalachian Voices, Save RGV, the Carrizo-Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, the Miccosukee Tribe, Miami Waterkeeper, and the South Texas Environmental Justice Network; Earthjustice provides outside counsel on high-impact cases. Cumulative disclosed outcomes include ESA listing protection for 149+ species, nearly 2 million acres of de facto livestock grazing retirement, and 49,310 acres of Algodones Dunes protected from off-road vehicles.
