Descriptiontext

The Leibniz-Institut für Präventionsforschung und Epidemiologie – BIPS GmbH is a non-profit research institute headquartered in Bremen, Germany, founded in 1981 and structured as a GmbH under German law. It is a full member of the Leibniz Association since January 2013 and receives institutional core funding jointly from the German federal government and the State of Bremen, supplemented by competitive grants from DFG, the European Union, and other public research funders. As of December 2025, the institute employs approximately 211 staff across departments covering epidemiological methods and cause research, clinical epidemiology, prevention and evaluation, statistical methods in epidemiology, and research data infrastructure and data science.

BIPS's core technical assets are large-scale population health research infrastructures: it serves as the Bremen examination center for the NAKO Gesundheitsstudie (Germany's largest population health study, 200,000+ participants), operates access to the GePaRD German pharmacoepidemiological research database, runs the BIPS BioBank, and hosts the Bremer Krebsregister (Bremen Cancer Registry). These feed a Research Data Portal (rdp.bips.eu) that exposes data to global researchers via metadata catalogs, the NFDI4Health Health Study Hub, and DataSHIELD-based remote analysis. The institute also develops and publishes open-source statistical software (MetS-Score, MODYS, SAS Two-Phase Package) and methodological innovations in causal inference, with code released via its GitHub organization.

Commercially, BIPS does not operate a traditional for-profit model; data, software, and consulting services are provided on a non-commercial basis to the scientific community, while policy advisory work flows to national and international bodies including the WHO (where BIPS is a designated Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention, Nutrition and Physical Activity since 2016). Its customer base spans the international scientific research community, healthcare policy makers, and the general population participating in cohort studies, with the institute's primary mission being the generation of scientific evidence for the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases.

Mirage NewsGenetic Switch May Boost Cold-Weather Tomato YieldResearchers from Hebrew University and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry identified a genetic mechanism involving the miR167 regulatory RNA that coordinates flower development and fruit formation in tomatoes. Gene-edited plants using CRISPR technology exhibited parthenocarpy, producing significantly higher yields—up to 18 times more fruits early in the season under cold conditions compared to unmodified plants. This discovery paves the way for developing tomato varieties capable of reliable winter harvests and improved stability in colder growing seasons.InterhospiRadar technology enables contactless patient vital sign monitoring through innovative medical sensor system – International HospitalResearchers at Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM have developed a 61 GHz radar sensor system that monitors patients' vital signs without physical contact, capable of detecting heart and respiratory rates through clothing, blankets, and mattresses by measuring micro-movements of the chest wall. The system, developed as part of a collaborative project with Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz Institute for High Performance Microelectronics, and Thiem-Research GmbH, has been in clinical testing since September 2023 and aims to address diagnostic challenges for patients with burns, skin conditions, or infectious diseases. Researchers are now expanding the system to enable simultaneous multi-patient monitoring at greater distances, with potential applications in rural healthcare and nursing homes.European UnionKulturGutRetter field test for a cultural heritage response unitA large-scale field test was conducted in Dresden, Germany on October 18-19, 2023, where 57 participants from the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), the Leibniz Research Institute for Archaeology (LEIZA), and the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) tested emergency conservation workflows for cultural heritage using a fictive disaster scenario. The test evaluated a mobile emergency conservation lab developed by LEIZA, digital documentation systems including the QField app with QR-code ID cards, and coordination procedures between heritage specialists and disaster relief personnel. The KulturGutRetter project, launched in 2019 with support from the Federal Foreign Office, aims to establish a deployable cultural heritage response unit for rapid international assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism when cultural assets are threatened by disasters.
