What GroupGets does
Welcome to group getting! In 2013, we tried to buy special purpose processors for a passion project. They were only sold in lots of 1000. After scouring the internet for a solution, we discovered that there was no secure platform for collectively purchasing existing products with minimum order restrictions. Getting a group together for a bulk purchase was a difficult and risky proposition, and crowdfunding platforms were no help. Traditional crowdfunding sites are great. But, they neglect independent buyers who need to team up with other buyers around the world to get bulk pricing discounts and access components, end user products, and services that have high minimum order quantities. So, we set out to fill this gap. We created GroupGets to provide an intuitive group buying platform where professionals and enthusiasts can participate in collective purchasing as easily as they buy anything else online, and get rewarded for creating group buys and helping others get around minimum order requirements. No Vaporware. No year-long shipping delays. Just simple, secure group buying. GroupGets is where the rest of us—the makers, hobbyists, DIY engineers, crafters, artists, small businesses, and deal seekers—get together and hack minimum order restrictions.

GroupGets competitors and assessment
Company assessmentDirect peers
- SparkFun Electronics: SparkFun is a direct peer — a US-based electronics distributor and in-house product developer that sells breakout boards, sensors, and developer kits to makers, educators, and engineers, with a comparable model of combining third-party components (e.g., FLIR) with proprietary SparkFun-designed boards and open-source firmware.
- Adafruit Industries: Adafruit is a direct peer — an e-commerce-driven maker electronics company that designs, manufactures, and sells its own boards, sensors, and accessories alongside curated third-party products to a similar maker/engineer/educator audience.
- Crowd Supply: Crowd Supply is a direct peer — a group-order / crowd-purchasing platform for open-source hardware that matches GroupGets' distinctive group order system, helping makers validate demand and fund production runs for new hardware products.
- Seeed Studio: Seeed Studio is a direct peer — a maker-focused electronics distributor and Fusion PCB/PCBA service that designs and sells its own development boards and sensor modules while reselling third-party components, with similar target customers in IoT, robotics, and maker communities.
- Pololu Robotics & Electronics: Pololu is a direct peer — a US-based distributor and manufacturer of electronics, sensors, motor controllers, and robotics components sold direct-to-consumer to engineers, researchers, and hobbyists, overlapping with GroupGets' thermal/acoustic sensor business in academic and research applications.
Broad incumbents
- Digi-Key Electronics: Digi-Key is a broad incumbent — a massive catalog electronics distributor that sells FLIR thermal modules, Hamamatsu sensors, and development boards at scale, competing on breadth, price, and logistics rather than niche depth.
- Mouser Electronics: Mouser is a broad incumbent — a global catalog distributor of semiconductors and electronic components, including thermal sensors and FLIR products, that competes on selection and speed-of-delivery rather than maker-focused integration support.
- FLIR Systems (Teledyne FLIR): Teledyne FLIR is a broad incumbent and GroupGets' principal supplier — the original manufacturer of Lepton, Boson, Hadron, and Neutrino thermal camera lines, with much larger scale, direct enterprise sales, and broader product portfolio than GroupGets' niche distribution-plus-accessories business.
- Hamamatsu Photonics: Hamamatsu is a broad incumbent and GroupGets' spectrometer supplier — a global photonics manufacturer whose MEMS micro-spectrometers (C12880MA, C16767MA) GroupGets resells alongside proprietary breakout boards, comparable as both a partner and adjacent competitor in spectroscopy distribution.
Emerging players
- Tindie: Tindie is an emerging player — a marketplace for maker-built hardware that overlaps with GroupGets' group order model as a discovery and sales channel for indie hardware creators, but lacks GroupGets' exclusive premier partnerships and proprietary integration products.
