Willits Unified School District

What Willits Unified School District does

Willits Unified School District is a public K-12 school district organized under California state education law, serving the Willits community in Mendocino County. It is a government entity, not a privately held company, governed by an elected school board and funded through state apportionment under the Local Control Funding Formula, local property taxes, and federal grants. The district does not charge tuition and operates as the exclusive public K-12 education provider within its attendance boundaries.

The district operates eight schools and programs spanning transitional kindergarten through adult education: Brookside Elementary (TK-2), Blosser Lane Elementary, Sherwood Elementary, Baechtel Grove Middle School, Willits High School, Sanhedrin High School (alternative high school with adult education and a horticulture program), and the New Horizons Independent Study Program. Willits Adult Education, hosted at Sanhedrin, extends the service surface to adult learners pursuing GED preparation and continuing education. Programs include core academics, special education, athletics, counseling, library services, transportation, and extracurricular activities.

The technology stack is composed entirely of third-party education platforms rather than proprietary systems. Student information is managed in Aeries, which also powers online enrollment and the parent portal. Canvas LMS is used for distance learning at Willits High School, while Bright Thinker supports Sanhedrin's independent study program. The district and school websites run on the Apptegy content management platform, and instruction is supported by Google Workspace for Education with 1:1 Chromebooks distributed to students, including a Chromebook insurance program administered through Worth Ave Group. The district communicates with families through its website, dedicated iOS and Android mobile apps, Facebook pages at both district and individual school level, and an X (Twitter) account, with parent-grade communication flowing through the Aeries parent portal.
