Descriptiontext

Centre for Eye and Vision Research (CEVR) is an InnoHK-funded research institute established in 2020 and headquartered at Hong Kong Science Park (Pak Shek Kok, Shatin), operating as a cross-institutional collaboration between The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Waterloo. It runs three interdisciplinary research platforms — Preserving and Restoring Healthy Vision, Next Generation Therapeutics, and Advanced Optometric Technologies — staffed by a multidisciplinary team of over 100 professionals developing technologies that prevent, detect, treat, and mitigate vision loss, including earlier detection of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

CEVR's commercial face is a portfolio of six active ventures: MimetiCore (biomimetics nanoplatform for retinal diseases), FlavoTear (baicalein-based ocular therapy platform), Viromids (redosable, low-cost gene-delivery platform for ocular therapy), ObstAR (augmented reality software for the visually impaired), Eye-on-a-Chip Device (rapid ocular drug testing, commercialized via Eyenova Biotech), and SLOPE (Structured Light Observation and Perception Evaluation device integrating quantum optics for macular health assessment). Underlying components range from psychophysical measurement methods and quantum optics to organ-on-chip microfluidics and biomimetic nanoparticles.

The institute's business model is structured around government research grants (Hong Kong SAR InnoHK initiative), industry-partner-funded collaborations, and the licensing or spin-out of IP into ventures such as Eyenova Biotech. Go-to-market is enterprise field sales of R&D outputs to industry partners, formalized through a newly appointed Assistant Scientific Director with explicit commercialization mandate. Revenue figures, pricing, and customer logos are not publicly disclosed; the institute has no named commercial customers in the available data, indicating that monetization remains at an early, grant-funded stage with selective commercial IP transfer.

Mirage News3D-Printed Contact Lenses Ready in 20 MinutesUniversity of Waterloo researchers have developed a 3D printing platform using a new hydrophilic silicone material that can produce patient-specific contact lenses in as little as 20 minutes, enabling custom-designed lenses to be manufactured during a single optometrist visit. The technology addresses the limitation of conventional lenses being available only in limited sizes and shapes, which currently requires patients with irregular corneas to attend multiple appointments over weeks or months for proper fitting. The team has filed a provisional patent for the material, is preparing for in vivo studies, and is working with the Centre for Vision and Eye Research to advance commercialization, having received a Gold Medal at the Shanghai International Exhibition of Inventions.University of WaterlooAccelerating commercialization of vision researchDr. Chau-Minh Phan, a scientist-entrepreneur from the University of Waterloo, has relocated to Hong Kong to join the InnoHK Centre for Eye and Vision Research (CEVR) as assistant scientific director for a five-year term, with a mandate to support R&D commercialization and connect projects with industry partners. CEVR is a research collaboration between The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Waterloo, funded under the InnoHK initiative of the Hong Kong SAR Government. Dr. Phan brings prior entrepreneurial experience, having co-founded OcuBlink Inc, which developed advanced in vitro eye models for contact lens testing, and Eyenova Biotech, a CEVR startup creating an eye-on-a-chip device for ophthalmic drug testing that recently won gold medals at international innovation exhibitions.
