Descriptiontext

EPCC (the Edinburgh Parallel Computer Centre) is a department of the University of Edinburgh and, as of 2025, the UK's first formally designated National Supercomputing Centre. It operates a portfolio of national high-performance computing platforms: ARCHER2 (the UK's National Supercomputing Service at 28 petaflops); Cirrus (an HPE Cray EX4000 / AMD EPYC 9825 system with 73,728 cores and Slingshot 11 interconnect); DiRAC Tursa (an extreme-scaling GPU system with 291,840 Tensor cores built on Eviden Sequana XH2000 racks); NEXTGenIO (an Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory prototype); an FPGA testbed; and the Somerville astronomy data service. Alongside these it runs the Edinburgh International Data Facility (EIDF), which combines 20PB Lustre, 12PB Ceph, and 30PB tape storage with GPU-enabled machine-learning platforms including a four-system Cerebras CS-3 Wafer-Scale Cluster, as well as Trusted Research Environments implementing the Five Safes model for sensitive data. The Advanced Computing Facility data centre in Edinburgh houses the bulk of this hardware under purpose-built HPE ARCS cooling, and construction began in June 2026 to host the UK's next £750m national supercomputer.

EPCC serves four primary user groups: UK academic researchers (coordinated through UKRI funding bodies); public-sector and healthcare organisations requiring secure data analysis (Public Health Scotland, Scottish Government, NHS Digital, the Met Office, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, and the ISARIC4C COVID-19 consortium); commercial users in aerospace, energy, automotive, and life sciences accessing Cirrus on a pay-per-use basis; and the STFC particle-physics, astrophysics, cosmology, and nuclear-physics community via DiRAC. Its 25-year-old MSc in High Performance Computing and the Software Sustainability Institute (founded with Manchester, Oxford, and Southampton, with £17m of cumulative UKRI funding) sustain a national training pipeline.

EPCC generates no commercial revenue; it is funded through research grants and government allocations. Major funding streams include UKRI (over £500m invested in ARCHER2 to date), the £750m commitment for the next national supercomputer (2026), the £19.5m Cirrus expansion grant (2026), the £17m VECTA partnership with Rolls-Royce (2026), the £45.7m ExCALIBUR programme, €10m for Pilot-UKAIFA (EU and UK Government, 2025), and the £600m Edinburgh & South-East Scotland City Region Deal that underwrites EIDF through 2033. Access for academic users is coordinated through UKRI; commercial access to Cirrus is offered on a pay-per-use basis. Independent London Economics analysis found ARCHER2 delivered £4.2bn in UK economic benefit against ~£500m of costs, an £8.30-per-£1 return, which has been central to subsequent funding commitments.

HpcwireSince 1987 – Covering the Fastest Computers in the World and the People Who Run ThemQuantinuum, Rolls-Royce, Riverlane, and EPCC (the UK National Supercomputing Centre at the University of Edinburgh) announced a multi-year collaboration on July 14, 2026, to explore how fault-tolerant quantum computers can work alongside supercomputers for industrial applications, particularly gas turbine design. The partners will test computational building blocks for quantum algorithms on Quantinuum's Helios quantum computer and assess scalability on planned future systems. The collaboration supports the UK Government's quantum computing mission to develop accessible quantum computers capable of one trillion error-free operations, known as "teraQuOp" systems.Third NewsExploring Quantum Computing for Industrial Design: A New Collaboration Among Leading Tech EntitiesQuantinuum has partnered with Rolls-Royce, Riverlane, and the University of Edinburgh's EPCC to explore applications of quantum computing in industrial design, specifically for fluid dynamics simulations used in gas turbine development. The collaboration integrates Quantinuum's Helios quantum computer with Rolls-Royce's industrial applications, Riverlane's quantum error correction technology, and EPCC's high-performance computing capabilities to develop hybrid quantum-classical algorithms. This multi-year partnership reinforces the UK's commitment to advancing quantum infrastructure, marking a shift from foundational research toward applicable industrial-level solutions.Third NewsExploring Quantum Computing for Industrial Design and Simulation: A Revolutionary CollaborationQuantinuum, Rolls-Royce, Riverlane, and the University of Edinburgh's EPCC have entered a landmark multi-year collaboration to advance industrial design and simulations using fault-tolerant quantum computing, specifically targeting complex fluid dynamics for gas turbine design. The partnership will test industry-relevant quantum algorithms on Quantinuum's Helios quantum computer while exploring hybrid quantum-classical approaches to overcome computational limitations of existing supercomputers. The collaboration supports the UK's national quantum computing mission to develop 'teraQuOp' systems capable of performing one trillion error-free operations.Third NewsExploring Quantum Computing Applications in Industrial Design and Simulation Through Collaborative EffortsA collaboration was announced on July 14, 2026 between Quantinuum, Rolls-Royce, Riverlane, and the University of Edinburgh's EPCC to explore fault-tolerant quantum computing applications for industrial design, particularly complex flow simulations used in gas turbine construction. Quantinuum will provide access to its Helios quantum computer platform while Rolls-Royce contributes industrial application expertise, Riverlane brings quantum error correction knowledge, and EPCC contributes supercomputing capabilities. The partnership aims to develop hybrid quantum-classical algorithms and aligns with the UK government's initiative to create quantum computers capable of performing one trillion faultless operations.Innovation News NetworkInside EPCC, the UK’s first National Supercomputing CentreEPCC at the University of Edinburgh was formally designated as the UK's first National Supercomputing Centre in 2025, positioning it as the hub of the UK Compute Roadmap to advance HPC and AI capabilities nationally. The centre operates major computational platforms including ARCHER2 (28 petaflops) and the new Cirrus system, while leading initiatives such as the €10m EU-UK Pilot-UKAIFA and a £17m VECTA partnership with Rolls-Royce for sustainable aviation research. Independent analysis shows ARCHER2 delivered £4.2bn in UK economic benefit over its five-year operational period, with a £19.5m UKRI investment set to more than double Cirrus's capacity by late 2026.World Construction NetworkWork begins on UK’s $990m national supercomputer in EdinburghWork has begun on a new national supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh, backed by up to £750m from the UK government. The machine will be 50 times more powerful than the current ARCHER2, delivering at least a billion-billion calculations per second. It will support AI, science, and sustainability research, with sustainability features including energy-efficient cooling.Innovation News NetworkHow high-performance computing is powering the next generation of innovationThis special focus publication explores the transformative impact of high-performance computing (HPC) on industries such as AI, data science, and semiconductor innovation. It highlights the roles of specific UK-based organizations including The Hartree Centre and EPCC in advancing digital technologies and supercomputing capabilities. The article also emphasizes the importance of measurement standards for accelerating semiconductor technology development.UcUC Chile Authorities Visit Universities in Scotland With a Focus on AI and Data ScienceUC Chile President Juan Carlos de la Llera led a delegation to Scotland (Edinburgh, Glasgow, and St Andrews) from April 20-30, 2026, to explore interdisciplinary research models and strengthen strategic partnerships in AI regulation, supercomputing, and doctoral training.
