Grof Transpersonal Training

What Grof Transpersonal Training does

Grof Transpersonal Training (GTT), operating as a 501(c)(3) non-profit under the legal entity The Institute for Holotropics, Inc., is the sole worldwide certifier of Holotropic Breathwork® facilitators. Founded in 1988 by Stanislav and Christina Grof and sold in 1998 to Tav and Cary Sparks, the organization delivers multi-day residential training modules that teach a proprietary methodology for inducing non-ordinary states of consciousness through accelerated breathing, evocative music, and bodywork. Its core curriculum includes the Holotropic Paradigm module and the Spiritual Emergency module, anchored at venues such as Sunrise Ranch in Colorado and hosted internationally in locations including Ireland, Spain, Slovenia, and Australia.

GTT's business model rests on four revenue streams: (1) training module and workshop registration fees with tiered early-bird pricing, (2) e-commerce sales of an extensive book catalog authored by the Grofs, Tav Sparks, and affiliated practitioners ($12-$70 per title), facilitator training manuals (restricted to enrolled/certified practitioners at $22-$50), audio CDs, tarot decks, and eye masks, (3) Zoom-based personal consultations with Director Cary Sparks at $95 per 60-minute session, and (4) ancillary partnerships with publishers like HanfordMead.com for digital downloads. Distribution is entirely direct, with no third-party retail channels and international fulfillment via US Postal Service. The customer base spans individual personal-development seekers, mental-health professionals seeking certification, and residential recovery programs, with no disclosed enterprise agreements.

The organization is leanly staffed from a Mill Valley, California mailing address, led by Director Cary Sparks following Tav Sparks' death in August 2020, with a small circle of contracted module facilitators. Geographic reach extends across at least 17 countries on five continents, though EU operations must rebrand as "Institute for Holotropics" due to trademark restrictions held by an unaffiliated entity. The product catalog continues to expand, with new book and oracle deck releases in 2024 and 2025, increasingly positioning GTT within the broader psychedelic-integration and consciousness-research publishing ecosystem.

Emerging players

• Clarity Breathwork: Clarity Breathwork offers breathwork facilitator certification programs and online practitioner training. It is an emerging direct competitor in the breathwork certification space, targeting a similar practitioner audience to GTT but with online rather than in-person training delivery.
• Synthesis Institute: Synthesis Institute offers professional training programs for psychedelic practitioners and integration therapists in legal psychedelic retreats. Comparable to GTT as both train facilitators in psychedelic-adjacent and non-ordinary state work, though Synthesis focuses specifically on psychedelic-assisted therapy certification.

Direct peers

• Naropa University: Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado offers contemplative education programs including transpersonal psychology and somatic counseling degrees, with a chakra-based therapy training program. It is comparable to GTT in training mental health practitioners in consciousness-based and somatic modalities, and geographically colocated with GTT's Colorado training venue at Sunrise Ranch.
• Sofia University (formerly Institute of Transpersonal Psychology): Sofia University was originally the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, the founding academic institution for the transpersonal psychology movement. Comparable to GTT in subject matter and practitioner audience, it differs in offering accredited graduate degrees rather than workshop-based certification.
• Pacifica Graduate Institute: Pacifica Graduate Institute offers graduate degree programs in depth and transpersonal psychology, with faculty including transpersonal theorists. It is comparable to GTT because both train mental health practitioners within the depth/transpersonal tradition, though Pacifica is degree-granting whereas GTT offers non-degree certification.
• California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS): CIIS is an accredited university offering graduate programs in integral and transpersonal studies, including the Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research. It is directly comparable to GTT as both are based in California, both train professionals in non-ordinary state work, and both serve the same practitioner market for psychedelic integration and consciousness-based therapy.
• MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies): MAPS trains and certifies therapists in MDMA-assisted psychotherapy, including the affiliated GTT facilitator Marc B. Aixalà. It is the most directly comparable peer because both organizations occupy the niche of certifying mental health professionals in techniques for working with non-ordinary states of consciousness, sharing faculty and practitioner pipelines.

Broad incumbents

• Mindvalley: Mindvalley is an online personal transformation platform offering courses on consciousness, breathwork, and meditation with a global subscriber base. Comparable as both monetize consciousness and personal development content, though Mindvalley operates at substantially larger scale through digital delivery rather than residential workshops.
• Omega Institute for Holistic Studies: Omega Institute offers residential workshops, professional trainings, and certifications across holistic and personal development modalities including breathwork and meditation. Comparable to GTT as both operate residential workshop models serving personal growth seekers and professional practitioner development, though Omega spans many modalities beyond breathwork.
• Esalen Institute: Esalen Institute is a pioneering holistic learning center in Big Sur, California offering multi-day residential workshops in personal transformation, consciousness studies, and somatic practices. It is directly comparable to GTT because Stanislav Grof historically conducted consciousness research at Esalen, and both organizations operate via residential experiential workshops rather than degree-granting credentials.
