Gray Taxidermy

What Gray Taxidermy does

Gray Taxidermy is a privately held marine taxidermy company headquartered in Pompano Beach, Florida, founded by Captain Bill Gray in 1961 and currently owned by Ian Hall and Leo Lampone. The company handcrafts custom fiberglass fish mounts for virtually every saltwater and freshwater species, built from a proprietary library of one-of-a-kind molds created over decades by traveling to capture casts of actual fish specimens. The production process combines custom mold-making, fiberglass reproduction, multi-step hand finishing, and species-specific hand painting executed by an in-house team of approximately 15 finishing experts and four specialized painters, with seven quality-inspection checkpoints from start to crated shipment.

The core business is direct-to-consumer custom manufacturing: customers submit photographs and specifications of their catch and receive a museum-quality, lifetime-lasting fiberglass replica on a quote-based price, with a 12–14 week standard turnaround and an expedite option. Adjacent revenue streams include custom fishing tournament trophies in multiple species, wood and acrylic plaques, exotic-species mounts (lobsters, crabs, turtles, starfish, lionfish), baitfish action scenes, custom wave mounts, head/jaw/bill/tail mounts, Catch & Release certificates, and a branded apparel line (Gray CrewGear) sold through a separate e-commerce storefront. Pricing is not publicly disclosed and a 2% surcharge applies to credit-card payments.

Distribution runs through a toll-free phone number, the company website, hand-built custom crates with full transit insurance, and an on-the-ground Captains Support referral network in Florida Keys, Mexico (Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel, Ixtapa), Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica. The company self-describes as the world's largest marine taxidermy firm, claims more than 500,000 mounts handcrafted over 50+ years, and holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Revenue, headcount growth rate, and financial performance are not publicly disclosed.
