Kingswood Sports Centre

What Kingswood Sports Centre does

Kingswood Sports Centre, trading as Club Kingswood, is a privately owned independent health and fitness club located on Clayhill Lane, Basildon, Essex SS16 5JP, United Kingdom. Founded in October 1967 by Rex Guppy as a 6-court squash club, the business is now operated by Kingswood Sports Centre Limited, a UK private limited company under continued Guppy family ownership, with Alister Guppy as Chairman and Alex Owen as General Manager. Across its 51-100 employee base the company runs a 'country club' style proposition that combines a 300+ station gym on two levels, eGym smart strength equipment, an outdoor 135m² astro-turf rig, six squash and racketball courts, two padel courts, an 11-metre heated indoor pool with separate male and female sauna and steam, live and virtual Les Mills group fitness studios, Reformer Pilates, personal training, GP-referral-based rehabilitation (cancer exercise, cardiac Phase IV, COPD), a members bar with Sky Sports and TNT Sports, a function room, and on-site third-party partners for a clinic, beauty salon, hairdresser, and nursery/crèche.

The revenue model is a monthly direct-debit subscription (no joining fee, 30 days' cancellation notice) supplemented by ancillary transactional streams: padel court hire at £20 per 90-minute booking, squash coaching at £25 per 40 minutes, the Back & Active class at £5 for members, the 12-week Cancer Exercise Programme at £72, PT sessions, function-room hire, and members-bar sales. Discounted tiers are offered to NHS employees and Blue Light Card holders, a Platinum tier upgrades the standard membership, a Junior Gold tier covers 13-15-year-olds on parental memberships, a Joint Membership carries a 10% family discount, and a corporate scheme targets local employers for B2B wellness contracts. Go-to-market is direct-to-consumer via online joining portal, phone and in-person tour bookings, supported by an iOS/Android mobile app, an email newsletter, and Facebook.

The technology stack is facility- and vendor-led rather than proprietary: eGym smart resistance machines with screen guidance, InBody 370s body composition analysis, ICG Coach By Colour indoor cycling with Bluetooth sync, a Les Mills virtual class library on a 3-metre projector screen, and the Club Kingswood mobile app providing class booking, court reservation, check-in, workout tracking, goal setting, referral and exclusive deal push notifications. Member engagement is further reinforced by programmes rebuilt every six weeks, quarterly body composition benchmarking, and free GP-referral consultations for rehabilitation pathways.
