Descriptiontext

Local Government NSW (LGNSW) is the peak industry association representing all 128 local government councils in New South Wales, Australia. Headquartered at Level 8, 28 Margaret Street, Sydney, the organisation is described in firmographics as founded in 1883 and operates with 101-250 employees. LGNSW provides member councils with a comprehensive suite of services: advocacy and lobbying to state and federal government, free legal and policy advice, industrial relations representation, professional development and training, councillor and mayoral mentoring, executive recruitment, specialist contractor placement, and grant program administration. The association also supports the NSW Public Library Network of 360 local public libraries through co-advocacy with the NSW Public Libraries Association.

LGNSW's service portfolio is organised into seven core member support categories. Legal Support covers the Local Government Act, planning and environmental law, administrative law, property law, contract law, procurement, and Code of Conduct matters. Workplace Relations handles award negotiation, enterprise agreements, disputes, performance management, and representation before industrial tribunals. Management Solutions (operated by LGNSW Management Solutions since 1992) delivers HR, executive recruitment, performance reviews, benchmarking, organisational reviews, workplace analytics, and outplacement. Learning and Development provides professional and councillor-specific courses, while the Networks program operates 40+ professional communities across general management, environment, planning, and social/community disciplines. Grants administration handles programs including the Flying-fox Habitat Restoration Program, Greening our City, and Increasing Resilience to Climate Change, with social and community policy advocacy covering Aboriginal affairs, ageing, arts and culture, children and youth, disability, libraries, multiculturalism, and women in local government.

LGNSW's business model is membership-funded, with revenue generated primarily through recurring council subscriptions and supplemented by fees for administering government grants on behalf of NSW and federal agencies. The go-to-market is relationship-led: councillors and staff access services under the direction of the mayor or general manager through a centralised contact point. The association holds strategic partnerships with the NSW Office of Local Government, NSW Aboriginal Land Council, Aboriginal Affairs NSW, the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (on climate resilience and Aboriginal community engagement via the Collaborate NSW program), the NSW Department of Communities and Justice, and federal agencies. Scott Phillips serves as Chief Executive Officer. LGNSW is not a technology company, does not disclose financial figures, and is member-owned rather than backed by venture capital or private equity.
