Kingsway Christian Church

What Kingsway Christian Church does

Kingsway Christian Church is a non-profit religious congregation operating under the Disciples of Christ denomination from a single campus at 7887 Poplar Ave in Germantown, Tennessee, a suburb of Memphis. Founded in 1956 as a mission church of Central Christian Church, the organization has provided continuous Christian worship and community services for over 68 years. Its core offerings center on traditional Sunday worship at Schaeffer Memorial Chapel (10:30 AM), supplemented by Sunday School programming (including a Podcast Theology class), twice-monthly fellowship gatherings, and a YouTube sermon archive. The church serves the greater Memphis/Germantown community, with outreach programs including daily Meals on Wheels service and a Monday night homeless ministry providing meals, showers, and safe resting space. It also operates First Joy Preschool as a wholly-owned subsidiary offering early childhood education.

The business model is funded entirely by voluntary tithes and offerings from congregation members, with no fees charged for worship services. Incremental revenue is generated through First Joy Preschool tuition and Schaeffer Chapel wedding venue rentals (available to members and non-members for ceremonies under 100 people), but no pricing for these ancillary services is publicly disclosed. The 1–10 employee headcount reflects a lean operation led by Senior Minister Rev. Dr. Ryan Starr (since fall 2012) and Director of Music Jeffery Brewer (24 years of service). Distribution is in-person at the Germantown campus with hybrid Zoom access for Sunday worship. The organization has no disclosed AI, technology, or proprietary product capabilities; its differentiators are its denominational heritage, the historic Schaeffer Chapel, its 24-hour prayer space, and its outreach-oriented mission under current leadership.

Direct peers

Broad incumbents

It competes for the same Memphis-area families and donors and represents the upper end of the local market that small congregations like Kingsway compete against.

Emerging players

• Christ Community Church (Memphis, TN): Christ Community Church is a non-denominational Memphis congregation with a contemporary worship style and modern family ministry programming. It draws from the same Germantown/Memphis demographic and represents the emerging evangelical style against which Kingsway's traditional worship model must compete.
