Elementary and district school Alter Teichweg

What Elementary and district school Alter Teichweg does

The Grund- und Stadtteilschule Alter Teichweg (ATw Hamburg) is a publicly funded K-13 educational institution located at Alter Teichweg 200 in the Dulsberg district of Hamburg, Germany. Operated by the Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg through the Behörde für Schule und Berufsbildung (BSB) under Principal Björn Lengwenus, the school provides tuition-free education spanning preschool (Vorschule) through upper secondary (Oberstufe) leading to the Abitur. It functions as a combined Grundschule (primary) and Stadtteilschule (secondary) institution, serving students from early childhood through university entrance qualification within a single organizational structure.

The school's core offering centers on comprehensive all-day education augmented by specialized programs including the Eliteschule des Sports (Elite Sports School, operated in partnership with Olympiastützpunkt Hamburg), the MINT/Junior-Ingenieur-Akademie for STEM, Internationale Vorbereitungsklassen for international and refugee students, Begabtenförderung (gifted education), full-day Ganztag programs, and cultural offerings such as Filmfabrik and the ATw Live podcast. Technology infrastructure relies on the IServ school management platform for communication, administration, and learning management, with WebUntis handling timetabling and substitution planning. Website analytics are run on Google Analytics and 1&1 WebAnalytics. Strategic partners include Sportverein Alter Teichweg e.V., Stiftung Kinderjahre, Common Purpose, Jugendmusikschule, Wilhelm und Else Heraeus-Stiftung, Phänomenta Flensburg, and Erasmus+ (with exchanges to Silkeborg, Denmark and Cuba).

ATw does not generate commercial revenue. The institution is funded entirely through public education budgets allocated by the Hamburg BSB, with no tuition charged and no private equity, venture capital, or alternative ownership structure. Distribution is exclusively domestic via the Hamburg school enrollment system, with catchment-area-based admission for standard programs and selective admission for the Eliteschule des Sports. Recent strategic activity includes the 2026 launch of the #Nextlevel ATW phone-free school initiative, the Miniphänomenta science exhibit, and the Lesinale book week, alongside the school's first-ever gold medal at the JtfO Bundesfinale 2026 in U18 boys basketball.
