Descriptiontext

Agencja Wywiadu (AW) is Poland's civilian foreign intelligence agency, established on 29 June 2002 under the Act of 24 May 2002 on the Internal Security Agency and the Intelligence Agency. The agency was created through the separation of civilian foreign intelligence functions from the dissolved Urząd Ochrony Państwa (UOP) and operates under the direct authority of the Prime Minister, who appoints the Head of AW. Its mandate is the protection of Poland's external security through the gathering, analysis, processing and transmission of intelligence on threats to Polish sovereignty, territorial integrity and defense, as well as counter-terrorism, arms proliferation monitoring, and cryptographic protection for communications with Polish diplomatic missions abroad.

The agency's operational core comprises signals intelligence (SIGINT), human intelligence (HUMINT), electronic intelligence, cybersecurity operations, and technical/analytical support for satellite communication, navigation, and observation systems. AW serves the President, Prime Minister, relevant ministers, the Head of the Internal Security Agency (ABW), and other authorized Polish state organs through classified channels. The agency maintains international cooperation with NATO and EU partner intelligence services at informational, operational, training, and technical levels. AW is headquartered in Warsaw at ul. Miłobędzka 55 and operates two dedicated facilities: a training center named after Tadeusz Pełczyński and a professional development center named after Jan Kowalewski.

As a government state entity, AW is fully state-funded through the Polish state budget via the Prime Minister's office and does not operate any commercial pricing or revenue model. The agency's current head is Colonel Paweł Szota, appointed on 5 March 2024 by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Beyond classified operational outputs, AW engages in public outreach through recruitment campaigns, university lectures, historical education initiatives (including the "Ekspozytura Rygor" comic series commemorating pre-war Polish intelligence traditions), and active social media presence across Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and Bluesky. AW's distinctive cultural positioning links the modern agency to the heritage of the pre-war Biuro Szyfrów (Cipher Bureau) whose cryptologists famously broke the Enigma cipher in 1932.
