B's Music Shop is an independent music instrument retailer and music services provider founded in 2002 by Brian Hansen, originally in Alma, Michigan and relocated in 2005 to its current Mount Pleasant, Michigan location at 613 N Mission St. The company operates a single physical storefront supplemented by an adjacent building at 615 N Mission St, acquired in 2021 to function as a warehouse, shipping center, and social media content hub, formalizing e-commerce and mail-order capacity. With 7 core employees and a network of approximately 12 music instructors, B's Music Shop has operated continuously for over 23 years.
The company runs a multi-revenue-stream model spanning new and used instrument retail, music lessons across roughly 18 instruments, expert instrument repair services, month-to-month band and orchestra instrument rentals, professional audio equipment rentals, and a proprietary B's Custom Pedal Collection featuring cat-themed collaborations with boutique manufacturers including Cusack Music, Old Blood Noise Endeavors, and Alexander Pedals. Its product catalog covers electric and acoustic guitars, pedals and amplifiers, vinyl records, turntables, accessories, instructional books, and branded merchandise. The e-commerce storefront runs on the Lightspeed platform; no proprietary technology is disclosed.
B's Music Shop's go-to-market is direct-to-consumer, combining brick-and-mortar retail with online sales, school community engagement, and a partnership with rentfromhome.com for online rent-to-own school-approved band and orchestra instruments. Pricing is transparent for rentals and repairs ($28-$209/month rentals tiered by instrument group, $10-$100+ repairs with rush and electronics adders), while lessons pricing is not publicly disclosed. The customer base is distributed across hobbyist musicians, school band and orchestra students and parents, performing musicians needing PA rentals, and vinyl collectors, with primary geographic concentration in Mid Michigan plus online reach supported by social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.
