The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Hyderabad is a government academic department within an Institute of National Importance established by the Government of India in 2008, operating from the Kandi campus in Sangareddy, Telangana. It delivers BTech, MTech (including specializations in Network and Information Security and an online Data Science track for industry professionals), and PhD programs, served by 26 faculty members and over 580 students across degree levels. The department maintains a NIRF top-8 ranking among IITs since 2016, anchoring strong inbound demand for admissions and research talent.

Technically, the department runs an in-house infrastructure stack centered on a Zero-Touch Provisioning (ZTP) platform for automated lab node management, SLURM-based cluster orchestration across 95% of department servers, MAAS for bare-metal provisioning, and an OpenStack private cloud with a self-service portal. Research compute is anchored by a 650 TFlops supercomputer under the National Supercomputing Mission plus NVIDIA DGX servers on a 100G Mellanox fabric, supporting research in AI/ML, multimodal document understanding, differential privacy, cryptography, and blockchain systems.

Financially, the department is not a commercial entity. It is sustained by Ministry of Education grants for operations and student scholarships, competitive research grants from SERB, DST, MeitY, and CSIR, faculty consultancy and workshops (TEQIP, GIAN, TLC), and tuition revenue from the online MTech in Data Science program. Research collaborations with Adobe Research, IBM Research, and Shell Technologies, and incubation support via the FLYSKY cell, extend its reach into industry and entrepreneurship.
