Dierenambulance Rotterdam

What Dierenambulance Rotterdam does

Dierenambulance Rotterdam (legal entity: Stichting Dierenambulance R.e.o., KVK 41130700) is a nonprofit foundation headquartered at Cartesiusstraat 88, Rotterdam, Netherlands, providing 24/7 emergency animal rescue services to residents of Rotterdam and surrounding areas. Founded in 1988 by Piet and Joke, the organization operates a fleet of five specially equipped animal ambulances — fitted with first-aid kits, drainage flooring, animal carriers, reflective striping, foldable cages, catching sticks and LED lighting — tracked via TomTom Webfleet and coordinated through a regional dispatch center (meldkamer) connected to the national Landelijke Meldkamer Dierenambulances hotline (0900-0245). On average it executes approximately 150 deployments per month and rescues more than 2,500 animals annually, roughly half of which require additional veterinary care.

The service portfolio extends beyond emergency response to scheduled animal transport (including medication administration and nail trimming), funeral and cremation services (Dieren Uitvaart), educational visits to schools (Educatie over Dieren), lost-and-found pet reunification via Amivedi, emergency temporary shelter (Noodopvang), and a separate small-mammal boarding facility (Knaagdierenpension) for rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and parrots. Operational collaboration is embedded with Brandweer Rotterdam (fire department), Politie Rotterdam (police) and Prorail for joint water, fire and rail-track rescues.

The business model is donation-driven: the foundation charges nothing for emergency rescue and operates without government subsidies, instead generating revenue through voluntary one-time donations, recurring monthly 'eurosponsors', corporate and in-kind sponsorships (e.g., Trustsafetynl, Rungis, Jumbo), the AOW-tegoed program with Pets Place for senior pet owners, occasional crowdfunding campaigns (such as the water-rescue boat), testamentary bequests, and small fees for non-emergency pet transport. Payments are processed via Mollie, iDEAL and PayPal; communications run through Mailchimp; and web analytics are handled via Google Analytics under GDPR-compliant terms.
