Descriptiontext

Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) is a public national university in Beijing, China, directly administered by the Ministry of Education (MOE). Founded in 1941 as the Yan'an School of Foreign Languages, it is the oldest foreign language institution established by the Communist Party of China and one of the first universities selected for the Double First-Class Initiative, Project 211, and Project 985 Innovation Platform. BFSU teaches 101 foreign languages across 122 undergraduate programs, 46 of which are exclusively offered by BFSU in China, serving approximately 5,700 undergraduate students, 4,300 graduate students, and 1,200 international students, supported by 1,200+ full-time faculty and about 200 foreign teachers.

The university operates through 28 schools and departments, including flagship offerings such as the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation (China's first, est. 1994), the School of International Organizations, the International Business School (AACSB and BGA accredited), and specialized regional studies schools (African Studies est. 2019, Asian Studies inaugurated 2019). Its technology platform centers on BeiwaiOnline, an Institute of Online Education established in 2000 that delivers multimodal distance learning under a unique Learner-constructed Modular Educational System (recognized in ISO/TR 29996:2024), and the BFSU Artificial Intelligence and Human Languages Lab (BFSU•AI), established December 2019 to research NLP, language learning mechanisms, and AI-assisted language teaching. Two campuses are located in Beijing's Haidian District (East and West), with a six-storey library holding 1.6 million books in 74 languages, 2.16 million electronic books, and 38,000+ electronic journals.

BFSU's business model combines three revenue streams: government funding allocations as a state university, tuition and fees from domestic and international students across degree and non-degree programs, and donations received through the BFSU Educational Foundation (registered November 2010). Distribution is exercised through 23 Confucius Institutes worldwide, 300+ partnership agreements with universities in 80+ countries, and direct admissions offices for overseas and domestic students. Notable commercial/placement outcomes include training over 50 Chinese ambassadors from the Faculty of French and Francophone Studies, over half of Arabic-speaking cadres at China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and 50+ graduates who passed UN translation and interpretation exams since 2001.
