Viet Nam National Union of Students (VNUS)

What Viet Nam National Union of Students (VNUS) does

The Viet Nam National Union of Students (VNUS), legally Trung ương Hội Sinh viên Việt Nam, is the officially chartered national student organization of Vietnam, founded on January 9, 1950, and operating as a non-governmental mass organization under the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the Communist Party of Vietnam. It serves Vietnamese university and college students across all 63 provinces and centrally-administered cities domestically, and supports Vietnamese students studying abroad through chapters in the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Hungary, South Korea, Thailand, and most recently Australia.

VNUS delivers a diversified portfolio of student-facing programs: the Tiếp sức mùa thi (Exam Support) campaign during national high-school examinations, the Mùa hè xanh (Green Summer) volunteer program, scholarship services, employment/career services, the annual Olympic Kinh tế lượng và Ứng dụng (Econometrics and Applications) research competition, the Sinh viên 5 tốt recognition program, the VUG University Games, patriotic programs (Students with Seas and Islands), and a Student Leaders Competition. Its digital infrastructure centers on the hoisinhvien.com.vn portal, supplemented by Facebook, YouTube, Google+, Twitter, and email newsletters. The organization explicitly does not develop proprietary technology systems; no public APIs, SDKs, or commercial software products are offered.

As a non-profit entity, VNUS does not generate commercial revenue. It is funded through government support, membership contributions, and partner donations, with revenue figures not publicly disclosed. Leadership is determined through periodic National Congresses — the 10th Congress covered the 2018–2023 term and the 11th Congress is in preparation for 2025 — with the Chairman typically serving concurrently as a senior official of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee.

Broad incumbents

• Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union: The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union is the parent political-youth mass organization under which VNUS operates as the student arm. While broader in scope (covering all youth, not just students), it shares VNUS's political alignment, funding base, and leadership pipeline, making it the closest incumbent authority over VNUS's mandate.
• European Students' Union (ESU): ESU is the umbrella body of 46 National Unions of Students from 40 European countries, providing a continental layer above national student unions like VNUS. It is comparable as a higher-order coordinating entity for cross-border student representation and policy engagement.

Regional players

• National Union of Students (Australia): NUS Australia is the national peak student representative body for Australian university students. It is a regional peer to VNUS, given VNUS's recent expansion into Australia and the comparable national-coordination role for student representation and services.
