The program was founded in 1971, achieved NCAA Division I status in 1983, and completed its transition into Conference USA across 2023. It fields 20 varsity sports (16 referenced in operational scale commentary, expanded to 20 in product overview) across men's and women's programs including football, basketball, baseball, soccer, track and field, volleyball, swimming, and others. Revenue is generated through ticket sales across football, basketball, baseball, and other sports; ESPN+ broadcasting rights; recurring Flames Club donations supporting NIL and athletics programs; and corporate sponsorships from partners including Carter Bank, Foster Fuels, and Abich Financial. The 51.6K-follower X account, plus Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube channels, support organic fan engagement and recruitment marketing. As a privately held university department, Liberty Flames does not disclose financial details, and the program operates under Liberty University's administration without independent venture capital backing.
