Melrose Avenue Elementary Math, Science, Technology Magnet

What Melrose Avenue Elementary Math, Science, Technology Magnet does

Melrose Avenue Math/Science/Technology Magnet is a public K-5 magnet elementary school operated within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), located at 731 N Detroit Street in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles, California. Founded in 2009 and recognized as a Magnet Schools of America School of Distinction for 2026, the school delivers a tuition-free STEM-focused curriculum to elementary-age students and families seeking specialized magnet education within the LAUSD system. Its core academic program covers mathematics, science, technology, arts, project-based learning, and a Pathway to Biliteracy initiative, supplemented by enrichment modules including GATE (Gifted and Talented) instruction, Garden Rangers environmental education, Star Science Lab, and the Disney Imagination Campus Experience.

The school's technology footprint is built on an iPad-based 1:1 device program integrated with standard LAUSD platforms: Schoology (learning management), the LAUSD Parent Portal, LAUSD email, Google Calendar for event scheduling, and Google Translate for multilingual accessibility. There is no proprietary technology stack or external SaaS product — the school operates as a service-delivery institution rather than a technology vendor.

As a government-funded public school, the entity has no commercial revenue model. Primary funding flows through LAUSD district allocations; the school also operates ancillary fee-based enrichment via Star Afterschool. Enrollment runs through LAUSD's centralized choice enrollment system (enroll.lausd.net, choices.lausd.net), with distribution limited to the LAUSD regional catchment. The school is governed by LAUSD administrative oversight and supported by a Parent Teacher Organization (melrosepto.org) that provides supplementary engagement without ownership or operating control.
