What R3SOLUTE does
R3SOLUTE is a Berlin-based non-profit (gUG, gemeinnützige UG) founded in 2015 by Helen Winter and Sebastian Winter, operating in the field of conflict management and mental health awareness for refugee communities in Germany. The organization delivers peer mediation training, conflict competency workshops, storytelling sessions, and its proprietary M3NTAWARE mental health awareness program, primarily inside refugee shelters. Its model relies on training refugees themselves to become peer mediators, creating a culturally embedded delivery layer within shelter populations served by operators working with the Landesamt für Flüchtlingsangelegenheiten (LAF) and other partners in Berlin and Lower Saxony.
Programmatic delivery is human-led and group-based, with no disclosed technology platform beyond a web presence. R3SOLUTE has trained multiple cohorts of peer mediators — 15 in Marienfelde (2019), 8 in Wittenau, and 20 across Berlin (2022) — and reports participant feedback in the 90%+ positive range. The organization also extends online programming through a partnership with the Pepperdine Straus Institute for Afghan refugee cohorts.
R3SOLUTE is funded through a mix of government grants (LAF), foundation grants (e.g., Berliner Sparkasse, KfW Stiftung/Social Impact), private donations, and competition prizes including the Act for Impact Förderpreis 2018 (€40,000) and the StartSocial stipend 2019. End-user services are delivered free of charge; there is no commercial pricing model, and reported operating scale is small at approximately five staff supplemented by volunteers. The organization ranks 11th of 672 German startups in the 2018 ranking associated with its competition track.

R3SOLUTE competitors and assessment
Company assessmentOthers
- StartSocial: German social-impact scholarship and incubator program under Chancellor patronage that awarded R3SOLUTE its 2019 stipend. Comparable as an adjacent ecosystem enabler for early-stage German social enterprises in the refugee and integration space.
Broad incumbents
- Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO): One of Germany's largest welfare associations running refugee shelters and integration programs. AWO is both a current R3SOLUTE host partner (Treptow) and a plausible competitor that could internalize the conflict-competency offering.
- Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. Major German humanitarian and welfare organization operating refugee shelters and social services nationwide. Comparable because R3SOLUTE delivers programming inside Johanniter-operated shelters, and Johanniter could in principle deliver similar conflict-resolution workshops at far greater scale.
- Caritas Deutschland: Largest German Catholic welfare organization providing refugee aid, shelter operations, and psychosocial support across Germany. Operates overlapping psychosocial and integration programs and is a structural peer for any refugee-focused social services nonprofit.
- Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (DRK): German Red Cross society running refugee shelters, integration programs, and psychosocial services nationally. Comparable as a large incumbent providing the same broad social-support stack that R3SOLUTE addresses with a specialist conflict-resolution lens.
- UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency): UN agency mandated with refugee protection and solutions. Comparable as the overarching institutional framework that shapes and funds much of the refugee-services space in which R3SOLUTE operates, including through partner NGOs.
- Volkssolidarität Landesverband Berlin e.V. German welfare association operating community shelters and integration programs, including for refugees. Currently a host partner for R3SOLUTE's children's program in Marzahn and a structural peer for shelter-based social services in Berlin.
Direct peers
- International Rescue Committee (IRC): International humanitarian NGO delivering refugee resettlement, protection, and integration services. Comparable in mission (refugee empowerment, community-based conflict support) and program architecture, though at vastly greater scale and global geographic reach.
- Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution (Pepperdine): Leading US-based dispute resolution institution that has co-developed R3SOLUTE online storytelling workshops. Comparable in core methodology (mediation, restorative practices, conflict resolution training) and target populations (displaced/refugee communities).
- SIN e.V. Berlin women's shelter operator where R3SOLUTE established its first peer-mediation clinic. Comparable as a smaller, specialized refugee/women's shelter organization serving overlapping vulnerable populations in Berlin.
