Descriptiontext

Kiwi General Insurance Limited is a digital-native general insurance company incorporated in Karnataka, India in 2024, with a registered office in Bangalore (Koramangala) and a corporate office in Mumbai's Godrej Business District. The company received its certificate of registration from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in March 2026 and officially launched motor insurance operations in June 2026, initially serving private car owners with petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles. The business was founded by Neelesh Garg (former MD & CEO of Tata AIG General Insurance) and Saurav Jaiswal, both bringing 25 years of Indian insurance industry experience, and is backed by US-based private equity firm WestBridge Capital which holds approximately 70% equity, with Garg holding the remaining 30%.

The company's product is delivered through a single mobile application (iOS and Android) integrated with a web platform, with no physical distribution or agent network. The core technology is an AI-driven underwriting and pricing platform built from scratch without legacy systems, evaluating 32 variables per customer to enable hyper-personalized pricing that departs from traditional cohort-based models. Proprietary claims features include Super NCB (preserves no-claim bonus by dropping only one level on claim), Flexi Repair (banks minor damages for consolidation), InstaCash (immediate funds on repair booking), PayFirst (instant payouts at any garage), and a dedicated Claims Specialist as a single point of contact. The app also integrates policy management with challan payments, FASTag recharge, and PUC certificate tracking.

Revenue is generated through insurance premiums, with motor insurance as the primary stream at launch. The company targets Rs 300 crore in gross written premium in its first year and Rs 5,000 crore within five years, supported by initial capital of Rs 150 crore and a planned additional infusion of Rs 500 crore. Stated operational ambition targets transaction costs of 5-10% versus an industry average of 80-90%. Planned product expansion includes two-wheeler, commercial vehicle, and group health insurance, with longer-term intent to enter home, renters, OPD, health, fire, liability, and marine lines.

The exit is reportedly necessitated by IRDAI regulations permitting a promoter to hold only one insurance licence, after WestBridge launched Kiwi General Insurance in November 2024 which recently received regulatory approval to begin operations. Star Health, in which WestBridge first invested in 2018 alongside Madison Capital and the late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, declined to comment on market speculation.Life Insurance InternationalWestBridge begins process to exit Star Health stake – reportWestBridge Capital has initiated the process to exit its approximately 40% stake in Star Health and Allied Insurance, having requested expressions of interest from investment banks to run a sale process, with JPMorgan identified as the preferred adviser. The exit is reportedly driven by regulatory constraints: IRDAI licensing norms allow a promoter to hold only one insurance licence, which conflicts with WestBridge's role as promoter in newly approved Kiwi General Insurance. WestBridge first invested in Star Health in 2018 through the Safecrop Investments India consortium alongside Madison Capital and the late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, and the timing and structure of any potential deal will depend on market conditions and investor interest. The Times of IndiaKiwi General Insurance Aims for Rs 5,000 Crore Premium Book with Revolutionary AI-Driven Model, ETCFOKiwi General Insurance, a new general insurance company backed by private equity firm WestBridge Capital and insurance veteran Neelesh Garg in a 70:30 equity structure, has received regulatory approval and is set to launch in India.
