Descriptiontext

Kozloduy NPP (legal entity AEC Kozloduy EAD / АЕЦ Козлодуй ЕАД) is Bulgaria's only nuclear power plant and the first nuclear facility in Southeast Europe, commissioned in 1974 and wholly owned by the state holding company Bulgarian Energy Holding EAD. The plant operates two WWER-1000 pressurized water reactors (Units 5 and 6, model V-320 with hermetic containment and triple-redundant safety systems) totaling approximately 2,000 MW of installed capacity, delivering over one-third of Bulgaria's national annual electricity production. Operating licenses were extended in 2024 with term limitations removed, securing baseload operations until 2047 (Unit 5) and 2051 (Unit 6). Original Units 1–4 were decommissioned between 2002 and 2006 as part of Bulgaria's EU accession commitments and transferred to State Enterprise Radioactive Waste (DP RAO).

The business operates across four revenue streams: (1) electricity generation sold through the Bulgarian Independent Energy Exchange (IBEX) at market prices and via direct bilateral contracts (Kozloduy was the first company to register a freely-negotiated electricity sale in Bulgaria), (2) regulated district heating supply to the city of Kozloduy, (3) accredited external technical services including metrology verification, engineering chemistry, personal dosimetry, non-destructive diagnostics and control, and radioecological monitoring, and (4) ancillary revenue from asset sales, property rentals, and a portfolio of wholly-owned recreation facilities including Hotel Istar, Fortuna Hostel, the Sports and Recreation Complex, the House of Culture, and three vacation stations (Ledenika, Kranevo, Shiroka Polyana). Bulgaria is the first EU country to implement WWER-1000 fuel diversification, with Westinghouse RWFA assemblies reloaded into Unit 5 during the 2026 maintenance outage.

The company is governed by a Board of Directors chaired by Dragomir Dimitrov, with Ivan Andreev serving as Executive Director. The enterprise participates in all major international nuclear bodies including WANO (since 1989), IAEA technical cooperation programs, OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (since 2021), nucleareurope, ENISS, ISOE, WEC, and the UN Global Compact Bulgarian Network. Distribution is via IBEX for electricity, district heating networks for thermal energy, and direct bilateral contracts for services; primary customers are the Bulgarian national grid, state utility NEK, regional energy traders, and residential/commercial heat consumers in the Kozloduy region.

SeeNewsBulgaria's Kozloduy NPP shutting down Unit 6 for planned maintenanceKozloduy NPP shut down its 1,000-MW Unit 6 for planned annual maintenance on October 8, with zero power output as of Thursday. The Soviet-made reactor will be loaded with fresh fuel after maintenance. Unit 5 continues operating at 917 MW, but its output depends on Danube water levels.Capital.grΗ Βουλγαρία θα κατασκευάσει ανάχωμα για τη σταθεροποίηση της ροής νερού προς τον πυρηνικό σταθμόBulgaria is constructing a 300-meter embankment to secure cooling water supplies for the Kozloduy nuclear power plant amid severe drought conditions that have lowered Danube river levels. This operational adjustment follows production cuts at Bulgarian, Romanian, and Hungarian nuclear facilities due to record-low water levels. The Bulgarian government aims to complete the structure within two weeks to stabilize energy output.QazinformBulgaria’s Kozloduy nuclear plant cuts output amid falling Danube levelsBulgaria's Energy Ministry announced the preventive reduction of output by 120 MW at Kozloduy Nuclear Plant's Unit 5 on August 21 due to falling Danube river levels. This marks the first time in the plant's 52-year history that extreme weather conditions have necessitated a decrease in production, as water levels continue to recede. The measure aims to ensure safe operation while maintaining national and regional energy security amidst broader European drought impacts.Naver다뉴브강 가뭄에 불가리아도 원전 가동 감축Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear power plant is reducing the output of one reactor by approximately 120 MW due to historically low water levels in the Danube River caused by severe drought. This operational adjustment, necessary for maintaining safe cooling operations, marks the first time the plant has reduced generation due to extreme weather conditions in its 52-year history. The event reflects a broader trend across Europe, where countries like Hungary, Romania, and France are also experiencing significant reductions in nuclear power capacity due to heatwaves and water scarcity.AaBulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear plant cuts output because of Danube droughtBulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear plant will reduce output from Unit 5 by approximately 120 MW on August 21 due to falling Danube River levels caused by an unprecedented drought. This preventive measure ensures safe operation as the river recedes, marking the first time in the plant's 52-year history that extreme weather has forced a reduction in output. The crisis management group established in June remains active as other regional plants like Hungary's Paks and Romania's Cernavoda also face operational challenges. The Straits TimesBulgaria to curb nuclear output due to low water level in Danube riverBulgaria will reduce nuclear output at the Kozloduy plant by 120 megawatts due to critically low water levels in the Danube river affecting cooling. Romania and Hungary have also cut nuclear power because of the drought, with Romania shutting down Cernavoda and Hungary working to keep Paks plant running.Capital.grΒουλγαρία: Μειώνει την πυρηνική παραγωγή λόγω της χαμηλής στάθμης του ΔούναβηBulgaria announced a reduction in nuclear power generation at the Kozloduy plant due to historically low Danube river levels affecting cooling systems. The Energy Ministry stated that one of the two reactors will reduce output by 120 MW starting Friday, marking the first such reduction in the facility's 52-year history due to weather conditions.BgnesBulgaria’s Kozloduy nuclear plant to cut Unit 5 output as Danube reaches critically low levelsBulgaria’s Kozloduy nuclear power plant announced a reduction of Unit 5 output by approximately 120 megawatts as a precautionary measure due to critically low levels in the Danube River. This marks the first time in the plant's 52-year history that reactor output has been cut specifically because of extreme hydrological conditions and drought forecasts.BloombergBulgaria’s Nuclear Plant Plans First Output Cut Due to Low Danube - BloombergBulgaria's Energy Ministry announced that the Kozloduy nuclear plant will reduce output by 120 MW starting Friday due to record-low levels of the Danube River affecting cooling capabilities. This marks the first-ever production cut at the facility caused by severe weather conditions, as the plant operates two 1,040-MW reactors. The event highlights the operational vulnerabilities of regional energy infrastructure to climate-induced water scarcity.SeeNewsBulgaria's Kozloduy NPP to shut down if Danube drops by further 30 cm - expertBulgaria's Kozloduy NPP is at risk of shutting down if the Danube water levels drop by an additional 30 cm, with current levels close to the critical threshold. The plant's operators have implemented measures to maintain operation despite low water levels, but continued deterioration could force a shutdown. Similar concerns are affecting Romania's Cernavoda nuclear plant due to low Danube water levels.
