UpstreamPgh competitors and assessment
Company assessmentBroad incumbents
- American Rivers: National non-profit focused on river and watershed protection, including stormwater and green infrastructure advocacy. Closest national-level analog to UpstreamPgh's urban water + advocacy model, though operating at much larger scale across many states.
- Waterkeeper Alliance: Global network of waterway advocates focused on clean water enforcement and watershed protection. Comparable mission overlap with UpstreamPgh's watershed monitoring and advocacy work, but operates at international scale with a litigation/enforcement emphasis.
- The Nature Conservancy: Global environmental non-profit with significant freshwater and watershed programs, including stormwater and green infrastructure. Comparable water-focused mission but orders of magnitude larger and more diversified.
- Trust for Public Land: National non-profit creating parks and protecting land in cities, including green stormwater infrastructure projects. Comparable urban green-infrastructure focus, but operates nationally with significantly more resources.
Direct peers
- River Network: National network supporting local watershed and water advocacy organizations, including stormwater and urban river work. Directly comparable in mission structure (supporting community-scale water advocacy) but operates as a network of affiliates rather than a single local program.
- Friends of the Riverfront: Pittsburgh-area non-profit advocating for and developing riverfront green infrastructure and trails. Closest local peer in terms of urban water and green-infrastructure program delivery in the same Pittsburgh geography.
- Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy: Pittsburgh-based non-profit focused on urban parks and green infrastructure stewardship. Most direct local geographic peer with overlapping green-infrastructure mission and similar non-profit funding model.
- Western Pennsylvania Conservancy: Regional conservation non-profit covering the same Western Pennsylvania geography as UpstreamPgh. Comparable regional environmental mission with overlapping water, land, and community focus.
- Sustainable Pittsburgh: Regional sustainability non-profit working across the Pittsburgh region on environmental, economic, and equity priorities. Comparable local mission and overlapping environmental justice framing.
Regional players
- Chesapeake Bay Foundation: Large regional non-profit dedicated to watershed restoration, including green stormwater and advocacy in the Chesapeake Bay region. Highly comparable structure (infrastructure + monitoring + advocacy) but focused on a different U.S. watershed.
