THE TREE PEOPLE INC

What THE TREE PEOPLE INC does

The Tree People Inc is a family-owned and operated tree care services company headquartered in Pasadena, Maryland, founded in 2004. The company provides residential and commercial tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding, landscaping, lot clearing, brush removal, and 24/7 emergency storm response services throughout five Central Maryland counties: Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's, and Baltimore. Its service portfolio also includes specialized crane-assisted removals for large or complex trees near structures or power lines, and a dedicated commercial service line serving HOAs, property management companies, municipalities, schools, retail centers, and developers. The business is led by owner Michael Gray, supported by Office Manager Cindy Bellinger and Territory Manager Fred Sipes.

The company holds Maryland State Tree Service License #1927 and is a member of the Maryland Arborist Association. Operations rely on trained crews and modern tree care equipment rather than proprietary technology. Customers request service through phone, a website contact form, or referrals; a territory manager performs on-site assessments and delivers quote-based pricing. Financing for larger projects is facilitated through a Wells Fargo retail services partnership. The marketing mix combines local SEO, Google Maps, Angi, Yelp, Facebook, and direct mail (Clipper Magazine, Money Mailer) with substantial word-of-mouth referral flow, evidenced by a 4.9 Google rating across 155 reviews and 224+ total customer reviews cited.

The revenue model is professional services, priced per job based on factors including tree size, location, accessibility, equipment required, and scope of work. The customer base is diversified across individual homeowners and multiple commercial verticals with no disclosed anchor contracts, indicating a long-tail revenue profile. The company operates as a privately held, family-owned entity with no external funding, parent company, or institutional ownership.

Broad incumbents

• Asplundh Tree Expert Company: Large utility-vegetation-management and commercial tree care provider. Overlaps with The Tree People on commercial removals and crane-assisted work, particularly for utility line-clearance contracts in the same Mid-Atlantic service region.
• Davey Tree Expert Company: Largest U.S. tree care company with residential and commercial pruning, removal, and plant-health-care services. Competes with The Tree People on residential and commercial contracts but operates nationally with far greater scale, fleet, and insurance capacity.
• Bartlett Tree Experts: National arborist firm offering pruning, removal, and plant health care across the U.S. Direct overlap with The Tree People's core services, particularly in HOA, municipal, and high-end residential segments, but with regional office infrastructure and arborist credentialing.
• SavATree: Regional/national tree, shrub, and lawn care company serving the Mid-Atlantic. Competes head-to-head with The Tree People for residential and commercial tree service work in the Baltimore–Washington corridor with stronger digital marketing and packaged service programs.
• Yellowstone Landscape: Large commercial landscaping and tree care provider serving HOAs, municipalities, and corporate clients in the Mid-Atlantic/Southeast. Direct overlap on commercial pruning, lot clearing, and HOA contract work that The Tree People is pursuing.
• BrightView Holdings: Largest U.S. commercial landscaping services company. Competes for the same commercial property, HOA, and municipal tree-care contracts as The Tree People, with national procurement and pricing leverage that smaller operators cannot match.
• TruGreen: National lawn and tree/shrub care company with a packaged-service, subscription-oriented model. Competes indirectly by bundling tree and shrub care into residential maintenance plans that The Tree People does not currently offer.

Direct peers

• Monster Tree Service: Franchise-based tree service brand expanding across the U.S., including Maryland. Closest comparable in service mix (removal, trimming, stump grinding) and target customer (residential + commercial), but leverages franchise-driven marketing and operational standards.

Regional players

• McDonough Tree Service: Independent tree care operator in the greater Maryland/D.C. region offering removal, pruning, and crane service. Closest direct competitor to The Tree People in service mix, equipment, and target geography.
• Tom's Tree Service: Long-established family-owned tree service in the Mid-Atlantic offering residential and commercial removals and pruning. Mirrors The Tree People's positioning as a local, reputation-driven, multi-county tree care operator.
