Descriptiontext

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art ("the Carter") is a private nonprofit art museum founded in January 1961 in Fort Worth, Texas, at 3501 Camp Bowie Blvd. in the city's Cultural District. It holds one of the world's finest collections of American paintings, photographs, sculpture, and works on paper spanning over 200 years, built initially around Amon G. Carter Sr.'s collection of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell works and later expanded to include canonical American artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Thomas Eakins, and many others.

The museum's core offerings include its permanent collection, rotating exhibitions (e.g., Black Photojournalism, The Statue of Liberty from Bartholdi to Warhol, Lava Thomas: In Our Own Regard), and a broad portfolio of free programming: docent-led and self-guided tours, K-12 school tours with Title I bus scholarships, family programs (Itty-Bitty Art, Toddler Studio, Carter Playdate, Family Workshops), adult and young-professional events (Second Thursdays, College Night), member-exclusive events, and an unusually deep accessibility suite (Artful Moments for Alzheimer's/dementia, Close Encounters for blind/low vision, Connect to Art for developmental disabilities, Sensory Explorations for autism, Meet Up at the Museum for neurodivergent adults). Supporting infrastructure includes the Archives (founded 1991), the Gentling Study Center (2019), a research library, and an online collection database hosted in part via Google Arts & Culture. Underlying technology is a web-based collection management and digital access platform; the museum achieved partial WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance with alt text on 5,000+ images as of June 2026.

The business model is funded entirely by contributed income—individual donations, multi-tier memberships (Carter Society, Collectors Forum, Family Membership), museum shop sales (physical + e-commerce at store.cartermuseum.org), nominal fees for select events (e.g., $5 nonmember Tea & Tours), and grants from Arts Fort Worth, City of Fort Worth, Fort Worth Tourism Public Improvement District, Texas Commission on the Arts, Alice L. Walton Foundation, Terra Foundation for American Art, National Endowment for the Humanities, and others. General admission is free, with the museum operating as a Blue Star Museum for active military families.
