dorset live

What dorset live does

Dorset Live is a regional digital news brand covering Dorset county in South West England. It is operated as a content vertical within Somerset Live, which in turn is part of Reach plc, a publicly listed UK media group (LSE: RCH). The brand publishes local news, sport, what's-on / events, property, health, motoring, jobs, and community content aimed at Dorset residents and visitors, surfaced through the somersetlive.co.uk "all-about/dorset" hub and a dedicated dorset.live domain.

The product is a content-led publishing platform with no disclosed proprietary technology stack; it runs on the shared Reach plc / Trinity Mirror digital chameleon-branding CMS infrastructure and integrates with the InYourArea hyperlocal platform. There are no AI/ML capabilities, apps, or APIs documented. The business model is a multi-revenue digital publishing stack: display and classified advertising (via Bookanad, Reach Photo Sales, TotallyLegal jobs, Bookanad, and public-notice partnerships), subscription and premium content tiers (SUBSCRIBE / Premium), partner stories and sponsored content, and commerce / affiliate referrals. No pricing, subscriber counts, or revenue figures are disclosed at the Dorset Live level; financial contribution is reported only within Reach plc's consolidated regional publishing segment.

Operationally, Dorset Live is an active, publishing brand with no app distribution, no disclosed headcount, and no standalone legal entity. Its strategic direction is set entirely at the Reach plc group level, and the brand functions as one of several regional verticals used by the parent to monetise South West England audiences through local editorial, advertising, and classifieds.

Broad incumbents

• Birmingham Live: Major Reach plc regional title for the West Midlands. Shares the same publisher platform, ad stack, and audience development playbook as Dorset Live but at metropolitan scale.
• Manchester Evening News: Reach plc's flagship metropolitan regional title. Comparable as a Reach plc digital local news brand at much larger scale, illustrating the upper bound of what a Reach plc regional property can become.
• Wales Online: One of Reach plc's flagship large-scale regional titles, covering Wales. Operates on the same publisher tech and commercial stack as Dorset Live but serves a much larger audience and broader geography.

Direct peers

• Somerset Live: Direct sibling brand under Reach plc, serving the adjacent Somerset region with the same editorial format, template, and monetization stack as Dorset Live. The two are operated as parallel sub-brands of the same Somerset/Dorset local news network.
• Dorset Echo: Long-standing legacy local newspaper and website covering Dorset news, sport, and community content. Directly competes with Dorset Live for the same local audience and local advertising spend in the Dorset market.
• Devon Live: Reach plc regional news brand serving Devon with the same digital-first editorial model. Closely comparable in audience profile, vertical mix, and ad inventory, and operates in a neighbouring South West geography.
• Bristol Post: Reach plc regional title covering Bristol and parts of the wider South West/West of England. Similar audience scale, content verticals, and parent-company monetization infrastructure as Dorset Live.
• Gloucestershire Live: Reach plc regional brand for Gloucestershire using the same site template and content structure as Dorset Live, targeting a comparable county-level local audience in the South West/West of England.
• InYourArea: Reach plc's hyperlocal community and news platform, directly integrated with Dorset Live's navigation and content distribution. Comparable as a postcode-level local news and information product targeting the same Dorset readership.

Emerging players

• BBC Dorset: Public service broadcaster's local news pages for Dorset. Competes for the same local news audience in Dorset with a non-commercial, publicly funded model that puts pricing pressure on commercial alternatives like Dorset Live.
