Descriptiontext

GTD (legal name GTD System & Software Engineering) is a Barcelona-headquartered, privately held engineering company founded in 1987 that designs, develops, integrates, and operates mission-critical software and systems for European space, defense, scientific research, and energy customers. The company employs more than 500 engineers across six offices, serves clients in 26 countries, and has completed over 1,500 high-tech projects since inception. Its franchise rests on high-integrity software platforms qualified to aerospace and defense standards (AQAP 2110/2210, EN 9100, ISO 9001/27001/14001, CMMI Level 3), enabling it to bid on safety-critical programs where failure is not an option.

The core product portfolio spans flight and ground systems for European space programs (Launch Termination Computer System used at Andøya Space; Class A software for the Lunar Gateway i-HAB; MTG Lightning Imager algorithms; i-CDO launch operations IT for Kourou; SIBILA onboard AI prototype), defense and security systems (tactical communications, surveillance, C4I), and scientific infrastructure controls (GENROBOT SIL-2 platform for ITER fusion reactor robotics with F4E; LIPAc Machine Protection System with CERN; Haliade-X control system with Siemens Energy and GE; GAIA forest-fire management). GTD has also built a small ecosystem of operating subsidiaries — Portel (maritime-port SaaS), OpenChip (high-performance accelerators for European digital sovereignty), and LuxQuanta (quantum cryptography) — extending the corporate platform beyond the aerospace and defense core.

The business model is professional services plus mission-critical systems integration sold through direct enterprise and government engagement, with custom project-based pricing under long-cycle institutional contracts. Primary clients include ESA, CNES, F4E, CERN, SSC, Airbus, Leonardo, Thales Alenia Space, Siemens Energy, Navantia, Arianespace, and Air France. Disclosed annual revenue is approximately €90 million, with no external funding rounds reported; growth is being funded organically and complemented by strategic minority investments such as GTD's October 2025 participation in LuxQuanta's €8M Series A. The company is positioning around European strategic-autonomy themes (RISC-V processors via the CDTI- and EU-funded AR2SEC project, quantum-safe communications via LuxQuanta, European semiconductor accelerators via OpenChip).

Spanish company GTD's advanced launch termination computer system — which was monitoring the mission from Barcelona — detected the out-of-control trajectory and triggered a safe engine shutdown, redirecting the 28-metre rocket into a controlled ballistic descent into the sea near the launch site, preventing it from crashing on nearby towns, infrastructure, or the military base. Despite the failure, Norwegian Space Agency director Christian Hauglie-Hanssen framed the test flight as the beginning of a competitive era for European small satellite launch services, with competitors including Spain's PLD Space, Germany's RFA and HyImpulse, France's MaiaSpace, and the UK's Orbex.
