Dallas Black Dance Theatre is a nonprofit professional dance organization founded in 1976 in Dallas, Texas, by Ann Williams. It operates as the oldest continuously operating dance company in Dallas and the fourth-largest Black dance company in the nation, ranking among the top 10 largest contemporary modern dance companies in the U.S. The organization is structured as a three-entity ecosystem: the main professional company producing contemporary modern dance performances; DBDT: Encore!, a second company founded in 2000 to develop emerging professional artists; and Dallas Black Dance Academy, the official school founded in 1973 offering classes for all ages plus three performing ensembles (Allegro, Junior Performing Ensemble, Senior Performing Ensemble).

The company produces a seasonal performance calendar anchored in Dallas Arts District venues (Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre, Moody Performance Hall, Majestic Theatre) and supplements in-person programming with a virtual streaming platform launched in 2020 that has extended reach to 43 countries and 41 states. Its 2025-2026 season, titled METAMORPHOSIS, features the 20th anniversary DanceAfrica celebration. Educational programming includes an annual virtual arts education partnership with Dallas Independent School District that has served over 137,000 students, plus free virtual access for Texas Title I schools during Black History Month. The revenue model blends earned income (in-person tickets priced $49-$65, virtual streaming at $25 single or $129 season subscription, digital souvenir videos at $25) with contributed income from foundation grants, corporate sponsorships (American Airlines, Ford Foundation, Texas Instruments, Lexus, Dallas Tourism PID), and individual donations. The organization is governed by an independent Board of Directors and is currently undergoing a leadership transition following the appointments of Richard A. Freeman, Jr. as Artistic Director (October 2025), Christen Reyes as DBDT: Encore! Artistic Director (January 2026), and Kristie Patton Foster as Executive Director (June 2026).
