What Colby Design does
Colby Design is a Houston, Texas–based architecture and design firm founded in 1987 by Rudolph Colby, who has practiced architecture in Texas since 1985 and apprenticed under prominent Houston architects Lucian Hood and Howard Barnstone before partnering with Robert Morris, AIA. The firm operates from a single headquarters at 4901 Main Street in Houston's museum district and serves residential clients in the River Oaks and Memorial neighborhoods as well as commercial clients in hospitality, showroom, and corporate-office segments. Its core offerings span full-scale residential and commercial design (new construction, renovations, and additions), plus specialized custom product design in lighting, fireplaces, and fountains.
The firm monetizes through three revenue streams: professional design fees for residential and commercial architecture projects (single-family homes, estate residences, restaurants, showrooms, and corporate offices), direct sales of curated vintage lighting fixtures via an on-site e-commerce shop priced at $350–$450 per item, and licensing royalties on Rudolph Colby's proprietary lighting designs — most notably the Rosedale Lighting Family — distributed through Circa Lighting's showroom network and online channel. The underlying technology stack is non-proprietary; the firm's value rests on individual creative expertise, an award-winning project portfolio (including Good Brick Awards in 2003, 2021, and 2023, a 2011 John Staub Award, and a 2018 Luxe Interiors cover feature), and a long-standing client base in Houston's high-end residential market. Distribution is achieved through direct client engagement, a portfolio-driven website, and the Circa Lighting licensing partnership; there is no disclosed use of AI, proprietary software, or technology platforms.
