What Associated Designs does
Associated Designs, Inc. is a privately held residential home design firm founded in 1990 in Eugene, Oregon, by Rick McAlexander and Floyd Dinger. The company sells pre-designed house, garage, and duplex plans through a direct-to-consumer e-commerce website, and offers plan modification and custom home design services as higher-touch professional engagements. Its core product is a catalog of more than 1,100 pre-designed plans spanning 27 architectural styles, delivered as CAD files, PDFs, and printed construction drawing packages at a standardized 1/4 inch = 1 foot scale. Plans are sold under one-time license structures including single-build, multi-build, and unlimited-build (Master Builder) rights, with tiered package pricing from study sets to full CAD packages.
The firm operates with a small team of designers and support staff and serves primarily Pacific Northwest markets — Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California — with documented expertise in regional building codes and construction practices. Customer segments include individual homeowners, professional builders, custom home builders, real estate investors, and vacation/retirement home buyers. Distribution is centered on the company's BigCommerce storefront with filtering by architectural style, bedroom/bathroom count, and square footage, supplemented by phone-based inside sales, a marketplace listing through The House Plan Company, SEO, social media, and email. Custom design and modification services provide a professional-services revenue stream layered on top of one-time plan license fees. No external funding or parent ownership is disclosed; the business has operated continuously for over 30 years under founder leadership.
