Descriptiontext

Presque Isle Electric & Gas Co-op (PIE&G) is a not-for-profit, member-owned utility cooperative incorporated in Michigan and headquartered in Onaway. Founded on September 22, 1937, as the first cooperative to bring electricity to rural northeast Michigan under the Rural Electrification Administration, PIE&G expanded into natural gas distribution in 1994 and into fiber broadband through its PIE&G Connect division in December 2020. The cooperative serves approximately 35,200 electric meters and 13,200 natural gas meters across nine counties in northeastern Michigan, operating 4,909 miles of electric distribution infrastructure (3,841 miles overhead, 1,068 miles underground) and 568 miles of gas pipeline.

PIE&G's core products are electricity distribution, natural gas distribution, and fiber internet (PIE&G Connect), supplemented by community solar subscriptions operated in partnership with SpartanSolar, energy optimization rebate programs, and SmartHub-enabled account management and outage reporting via web and the MYPIE&G mobile app. All electricity is procured through a single supply partnership with Wolverine Power Cooperative, whose portfolio is 62% carbon-free and 19% renewable. The cooperative is governed by a nine-member elected board under one-member-one-vote democratic principles and currently employs 110+ permanent staff.

Revenue is generated through regulated, recurring monthly charges across three utility streams: residential electric distribution (approximately 35,000 members), natural gas distribution (approximately 13,200 meters), and fiber broadband subscriptions. Distribution is direct to end-use members with no intermediaries. Pricing is regulated, with member-approved rate increases scheduled for February 2026 ($0.02159/kWh) and February 2027 ($0.02160/kWh), and a $20/month Ice Storm Recovery Fee approved at the June 24, 2025 member meeting to service a $150 million emergency line of credit from CoBank following the catastrophic March 2025 ice storm. The cooperative announced the acquisition of Aurora Gas Company, indicating inorganic geographic or service-territory expansion.
