What HandNews does
HandNews is a French online sports media company founded in 2011 and headquartered in Paris, operating the website handnews.fr. The company is a specialized vertical media outlet dedicated exclusively to handball, covering French domestic competitions (Starligue, Ligue Butagaz Energie, Proligue), European club competitions (Champions League, European League), national team events, World Championships, European Championships, and the Olympic Games. Editorial coverage extends beyond France to include international handball leagues and clubs in Denmark, Norway, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Poland, and Hungary.
The platform is built on WordPress with a custom theme and is organized into four integrated modules: Actualités (news articles), Transferts (transfer tracking and rumors), Programme TV (broadcast schedules), and Résultats (match results and standings). The technology stack is standard CMS infrastructure with no disclosed proprietary components, no mobile application, and no public API.
HandNews operates a free, advertising-supported business model with revenue generated through display advertising and sponsored content. Distribution is direct-to-consumer via the website, with marketing driven primarily by SEO/organic search and content marketing, supplemented by email newsletters and social media. The company serves three identified customer segments: core handball fans (primarily French-speaking), fantasy/sports bettors (who use transfer and schedule data), and the professional handball ecosystem (clubs, leagues, and sponsors). No funding rounds, acquisitions, partnerships, leadership details, or financial disclosures are publicly available.

HandNews competitors and assessment
Company assessmentBroad incumbents
- RMC Sport: A major French sports news and broadcaster site covering multiple sports including handball news, results, and TV schedules. Comparable to HandNews in providing French-language sports news and TV schedules, but operating as a broad sports platform rather than a handball specialist.
- L'Équipe: The flagship French sports daily covering handball within a much broader multi-sport portfolio. Comparable to HandNews in covering French handball news, results, and transfers, but reaching a far wider audience and competing for the same French advertising and reader attention.
- Eurosport.fr: European sports media giant covering handball as part of a pan-sports portfolio including news articles, live scores, and TV schedules. Comparable in subject matter (handball news, TV schedules, results) but positioned as a generalist multi-sport site rather than a handball-focused destination.
Regional players
- LNH (Ligue Nationale de Handball): The official site of the French professional handball league, providing news, fixtures, standings, and statistics for Starligue and Proligue. Overlaps significantly with HandNews's French-league coverage but is the primary rights holder rather than a third-party media outlet.
Direct peers
- Handball-World.com: The leading German-language handball news site covering Bundesliga, European competitions, and national teams. Directly comparable to HandNews in that it is a single-sport, country-specific online news outlet serving a passionate handball audience via daily articles, transfer news, and live updates.
- AllHandball.net: An international handball news platform covering European leagues, transfers, and national teams across multiple countries. Directly comparable to HandNews as a digital sports media site built around daily handball news, transfer tracking, and competition coverage for a global handball audience.
Emerging players
- Handball-Planet.com: An independent English-language handball news source covering European leagues, transfers, and national teams. Comparable to HandNews in editorial focus on transfer news and competition reporting, though it targets international rather than French audiences specifically.
- We Are Handball (EHF): The European Handball Federation's media platform covering European club competitions and European Championships. Comparable to HandNews where European handball reporting overlaps, and a potential distribution or content partner for HandNews going forward.
