What Terra Design Studios does
Terra Design Studios is a privately held boutique landscape architecture firm headquartered at 241 McKinney Road, Wexford, Pennsylvania, founded in 2006 by Principal Cindy Tyler, PLA (formerly a partner at Marshall.Tyler.Rausch). The firm delivers master planning and full-service design from schematic design through construction administration, organized around six practice areas: public gardens and botanical gardens, family and children's gardens (including ASD-accessible sensory gardens), academic and campus landscapes, cultural institutions (zoos, museums, performing arts centers), nature and heritage gardens, and green infrastructure. Terra's signature methodology is a "story-driven" design approach that infuses each site's ecology — native plants, geology, hydrology, artful rainwater capture, and commissioned art — into a teaching landscape, supported by a fundraising-enablement service that supplies project narratives and donor brochures for client capital campaigns.
The studio is structured as a 1–10 person boutique led by Cindy Tyler and Associate Rob Thompson (BLA, SUNY ESF, joined 2007), with a flexible bench of consultants for landscape design, marketing, peer review, and illustrative rendering. Project teams are assembled through long-standing collaborations with national architecture firms (SmithGroup, Rothschild Doyno Collaborative, Seckel Group) and interpretive planning specialists (The Acorn Group, Natural Learning Initiative, EMD Consulting Group). GTM is sales-led and reputation-driven: the firm secures work through competitive national RFPs, professional referrals within the public-garden community, and active leadership in industry bodies (APGA, AHS, ASLA; Cindy Tyler serves on the AHS Board since 2019). Revenue is professional-services, project-based, with no publicly disclosed fee schedules; commissions span 20+ U.S. states with more than 45 commissions completed since founding.
Terra operates as Terra Design Studios, LLC, a Pennsylvania limited liability company with no outside capital, no parent company, and no disclosed institutional investors. Notable project outcomes include the Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children's Garden at Franklin Park Conservatory (2018 Community Arts Partnership Award), Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens (Florida ASLA Award of Merit 2015, ~1 million annual visitors post-renovation), the Garden of the Five Senses at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, the Garden Gateway Project at Kingwood Center Gardens ($9M+ capital campaign), and LEED Gold/Platinum credentials via collaborative projects. The firm is a WBENC-certified Women's Business Enterprise and a founding partner of the Pittsburgh Garden Trail consortium.
