Rakvere Teater

What Rakvere Teater does

Rakvere Teater, legally operated as SA Rakvere Teatrimaja, is a private non-profit foundation and regional repertory theater headquartered at Kreutzwaldi 2a, Rakvere, Estonia. Founded in 1940 and now in its 87th season, it produces approximately 10–12 live stage productions per season across a large house and small house, plus seasonal summer productions at historic Rakvere venues (Köster Gööcki maja, Rakvere Linnus). The repertoire spans classic Estonian drama (Tammsaare, Ibsen), contemporary international works (McGuinness, Pielmeier, Jacobs-Jenkins, Bergman), children's theater, and dance-drama collaborations with Fine 5 dance theater.

The theater operates as a "field sales theater" (väljasõiduteater), touring productions to twelve-plus Estonian cities (Tallinn, Tartu, Jõhvi, Narva, Põlva, Valga, and others) and to Liepaja, Latvia, with tickets distributed through Piletimaailm, Piletilevi, and an on-site box office. Pricing is tiered (€19 youth, ~€35 standard, €50 supporter) with a Kaduviku discount card, gift cards, and accommodation bundles. Ancillary revenue streams include the Teatrikino cinema (Wednesday–Sunday screenings), the Teatrikohvik café with an online ordering e-shop, group catering, and educational programs including free school visits (grades 1–12) under the Kultuuriranits initiative.

The business model combines earned revenue (tickets, café, cinema, tours, packages) with public funding from local authorities and the Estonian Ministry of Culture, as is standard for Estonian regional foundations. The ensemble of ~20–25 permanent actors is led by Creative Director Peeter Raudsepp and Director Velvo Väli, with a full technical and administrative staff supporting production. Marketing runs through the website, email newsletter, Facebook/Instagram, event series (RT Vestleb, RT Galerii, RT Matinee, RT MUUSIKA), and earned media in ERR, Postimees, and Virumaa Teataja.
