The Tree Expert llc

What The Tree Expert llc does

TLC Tree Expert Inc. is a privately held, founder-owned tree care service company headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, established in 2006 by ISA Certified Arborist Chris Toney. The firm delivers a comprehensive suite of arborist services to residential, commercial, construction, and municipal clients across the Colorado Front Range, with primary offices in Boulder and Louisville and active service coverage extending to Denver, Longmont, Weld County, and Northern Colorado. Its service portfolio spans tree pruning, tree removal, stump grinding, health diagnosis and treatment, crane-assisted removal, fire mitigation, preservation management plans, 24-hour emergency response, consulting, and sub-contracting work for other tree companies.

The company's operations are anchored by a specialized, capital-intensive equipment fleet—most notably Grove truck-mounted cranes (TM500E-2 40-ton and TMS800E 80-ton models) capable of 154-foot reach for large tree removals, alongside Vermeer BC1500 wood chippers, Vermeer SC292 stump cutters, International 4300 bucket and chip trucks, and Apex grapple trucks. TLC markets itself as the only Boulder-area tree service with 100% ISA Certified Arborist staffing, supported by $2,000,000 in insurance coverage, ISA Tree Worker Climber Specialist credentials, and a TCIA Certified Tree Safety Professional on staff.

Revenue is generated through project-based and recurring maintenance contracts priced via free on-site estimates, supplemented by sub-contracting fees paid by peer tree firms that lack crane capability. Distribution is regional and direct: phone, website contact forms, industry referrals, and a 12-year partnership with the City of Louisville's Forester. The company is privately held with no disclosed external funding and operates with 1–10 employees augmented by a network of independent sub-contractor partners including Flatirons Stump Removal and Walker Tree Care.

Broad incumbents

• Bartlett Tree Experts: National arborist firm providing tree and shrub care, pruning, removal, and plant health care to residential, commercial, and utility customers. Comparable to TLC because of its ISA-certified arborist workforce, science-based tree care approach, and similar service categories, though it operates as a much larger multi-region incumbent.
• Wright Tree Service: National vegetation management company providing tree care, utility line clearance, and right-of-way services to utilities and municipalities. Comparable to TLC because of overlap in tree-removal and arborist capabilities and government/municipal contracting relationships, though Wright is much larger and utility-focused.
• Davey Tree Expert Company: One of the largest employee-owned tree care companies in North America, offering residential and commercial arborist services including pruning, removal, and plant health care. Comparable to TLC because of its full arborist service model, ISA-certified staff, and presence across multiple U.S. regions, although it operates at a vastly larger scale than TLC.
• SavATree: Regional arborist and lawn care provider in the U.S. offering tree and shrub care, removal, and plant health care. Comparable to TLC because it provides the same core arborist services, employs certified arborists, and serves both residential and commercial customers in defined metro geographies.
• Asplundh Tree Expert Company: Large diversified vegetation management and utility line clearance contractor serving utilities, municipalities, and commercial customers. Comparable to TLC because of the overlapping tree-removal and arborist service line and municipal/government client base, though it operates at massive scale with utility-line-clearance as a core focus.

Direct peers

• Mountain High Tree Service: Colorado-based tree service company operating in the Denver/Boulder area, providing tree removal, pruning, and plant health care with ISA-certified arborists. Directly comparable to TLC because of geographic overlap, similar service mix, and overlapping residential/commercial customer base; TLC notes a former employee (Court Sherwood) was a Trim Supervisor there.

Regional players

• Dubois Tree Care: Regional tree care provider in the Colorado Front Range offering pruning, removal, and plant health care. Comparable to TLC because of geographic and service overlap and because TLC staff (Chris Rich) previously worked there, indicating shared talent pool and similar customer base.
• Helping Hand Tree Service: Longmont, Colorado-based tree service company offering tree care and removal services to residential and commercial clients. Directly comparable to TLC because it is a regional tree-care specialist in the same Front Range market and employs ISA-certified arborists (Chris Rich previously worked there).

Others

• Arbor Day Foundation: National nonprofit focused on tree planting, conservation, and public education about the value of trees. Adjacent/ecosystem peer to TLC rather than a direct competitor: it shapes consumer and municipal demand for professional arborist services and is referenced in TLC's resource/education content strategy.

Emerging players

• Monster Tree Service: Nationally franchised tree service brand providing residential and commercial tree removal, pruning, and emergency services. Comparable to TLC because of its focus on full-service arborist work, ISA-certified staff positioning, and franchise/regional expansion model across multiple U.S. markets.
