Essex Golf Union

What Essex Golf Union does

Essex Golf Union (operating as Essex Golf Limited) is the official county governing body for amateur golf in Essex, England. Founded in 1924 and headquartered in Witham, the organization promotes, administers, and supports the growth and participation of amateur golf across the county, providing guidance and assistance to all affiliated clubs and their members. It serves affiliated golf clubs and amateur golfers spanning all ages, genders, and skill levels — including juniors, women, seniors, and elite county-level players — through structured programmes such as taster days, junior development, and competitive pathways.

The organization's core offering is a unified web platform built on the Intelligent Golf software (version 10.1.2), which delivers competition management, online entry, live leaderboard functionality, and synchronization of the World Handicap System (WHS) across all member clubs. It organizes a broad portfolio of county competitions (Essex Amateur Championship, Seniors Championship, knockout tournaments, inter-club events) and manages Essex county teams from juniors through elite players, with success pathways evidenced by players qualifying for The Open Championship and receiving international call-ups. The organization is structurally backed by England Golf (national governing body) and The R&A, and is a signatory to the Women in Golf Charter.

Essex Golf Union operates as a private limited company funded primarily through recurring affiliation fees paid by member clubs, supplemented by tournament-related income and partnership opportunities. It pursues an event-driven go-to-market model, reaching golfers through affiliated club networks, the website, social media, and national England Golf initiatives (Get Into Golf, Women on Par, Girls Golf). The entity is independently operated with no parent company, no institutional investment, and no disclosed funding history — consistent with its posture as a non-profit county sports organization.
