The Spirit of Freedom Ministries

What The Spirit of Freedom Ministries does

The Spirit of Freedom Ministries operates as Reflections of Freedom Ministry, LLC, a 501c3 non-profit religious corporation headquartered in Edmond, Oklahoma. Founded in 1975 by Fred Hyde, the organization now operates under the leadership of his son Mike Hyde following the founder's passing. Its sole commercial offering is the Christian Intervention Program (CIP), a 20-week, court-approved, Bible-based curriculum designed to address chemical dependency and a broad range of addictive behaviors including alcohol, tobacco, drugs, pornography, and gambling. The product is delivered as two printable components — an Instructor Manual and a Student Manual — each available in Adult and Youth versions, sold at $30 per manual and bundled with a student book, Bible, and a CD of the founder's testimony "Raised From the Ruins."

The CIP is distributed through three channels: a church-based network that recruits pastors to host the program within their congregations, prison and jail ministries that adopt the curriculum for incarcerated and court-mandated participants, and direct material sales to individuals. The organization explicitly does not offer online classes, requiring an in-person instructor-student relationship as a core part of its model. Supporting resources — books, tracts, and charts — are also available for purchase.

Revenue is generated through one-time curriculum sales and tax-deductible donations supporting ministry operations. The operating footprint today is small (approximately 11 volunteer professional staff and Board members), a marked contraction from the prior iteration of the ministry, which the organization reports was in use in more than 1,800 churches with global missionary reach before Fred Hyde's passing. Current outreach relies on a modest digital presence across Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, supplemented by a toll-free Freedomline and direct phone contact.

Core offering

Reflections of Freedom Ministries offers the Christian Intervention Program (CIP), a comprehensive 20-week, Bible-based curriculum designed to address chemical dependency and addictive behaviors such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs, pornography, and gambling. The program is delivered through Instructor and Student Manuals (available in Adult and Youth versions) at $30 per manual, with each purchase including a student book, a Bible, and a CD of founder Fred Hyde's testimony. The curriculum is court-approved and explicitly delivered through in-person instructor-student relationships rather than online classes, targeting churches, prison ministries, and judicial system participants.

Product overview

Reflections of Freedom Ministries offers the Christian Intervention Program (CIP) as its primary offering—a court-approved, 20-week Bible-based curriculum addressing chemical dependency and dependencies such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs, pornography, cutting, video gambling, online pornography, and vaping. The program consists of two core curriculum components: the Instructor Manual (with lesson plans, answer keys, quizzes, and certificates) and the Student Manual (with fill-in-the-blank exercises). Both are available in Adult and Youth versions. Supporting resources including books, tracts, and charts are also available for purchase. The ministry explicitly does not offer online classes, emphasizing in-person relationships as essential to overcoming dependencies.

Broad incumbents

• Prison Fellowship / InnerChange Freedom Initiative: Broad incumbent: major Christian prison ministry organization running faith-based inmate rehabilitation programs inside correctional facilities. Competes with ROFM for the same court/prison-ministry distribution channel.
• Hazelden / Betty Ford Foundation (Christian tracks): Broad incumbent: the largest publisher of secular 12-step and faith-based recovery materials. Overlaps with ROFM at correctional facilities and recovery programs where faith-based tracks are accepted, though operating model and scale are very different.

Others

• Lifeway Christian Resources: Adjacent: large Southern Baptist publisher and curriculum provider that supplies churches with Bible study and discipleship materials. Could be a distribution partner or competitor depending on whether Lifeway chooses to enter the recovery curriculum niche.

Direct peers

• Reformers Unanimous (RU): Direct peer: a faith-based, church-hosted addiction recovery program sold as curriculum kits to independent Baptist and other churches. Competes head-to-head with CIP for adoption by pastors launching recovery ministries.
• Be Broken Ministries: Direct peer: provides the 'Set Free' Christ-centered curriculum for sexual addiction and pornography recovery, distributed through churches. Comparable in product format (workbook-based curriculum) and church-channel GTM to ROFM's CIP.
• Celebrate Recovery: Direct peer: the dominant church-based, Christ-centered 12-step recovery program. Both ROFM and CR sell curriculum materials to churches and train lay leaders to run recovery groups, competing for the same faith-based addiction ministry channel.
• Pure Desire Ministries: Direct peer: a Christian ministry providing curriculum and small-group programs for sexual addiction and purity recovery, sold to churches. Overlaps with ROFM in faith-based curriculum distribution and target dependency categories (pornography, etc.).
• Freedom Starts Today (Bettie Biehn): Direct peer: Christian discipleship and freedom-from-addiction curriculum sold to churches and small groups. Competes in the same niche of Bible-based dependency recovery workbooks distributed via faith-based channels.

Emerging players

• Life Recovery Bible / Stephen Ministry: Adjacent peer: Stephen Ministries provides church-based lay caregiver training and 12-step recovery Bible content. Not a curriculum sale like CIP, but a substitute option for churches choosing a Christian recovery framework.

Regional players

• Heart of the Matter Ministries (Chuck Biehn): Regional/adjoining peer: small faith-based ministry producing Bible-based discipleship and freedom-from-addiction resources, distributed primarily within US church networks. Operates in the same niche as ROFM's CIP.
