Descriptiontext

Albert J. Ellis Airport (OAJ) is a public regional commercial and general aviation airport located in Richlands, North Carolina, owned and operated by Onslow County. The airport serves Eastern North Carolina communities, with a particular focus on military personnel and families associated with nearby Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River, as well as regional leisure and business travelers. Its primary commercial offering is nonstop service operated by American Airlines to Charlotte (CLT) and Delta Air Lines to Atlanta (ATL), connecting passengers to over 500 global destinations via these hub airports. General aviation services are delivered through Skyport Aviation, the on-site fixed-based operator offering charters, aircraft management, contracted maintenance, and flight training via Homefield Aviation.

The airport's core physical asset is a 67,000-square-foot passenger terminal opened in 2015, complemented by an Air Traffic Control Tower opened in 2018, an Executive Terminal, expanded aircraft apron, and rehabilitated runway and taxiway systems. Passenger-facing amenities include Flight Line Express & Cafe (serving Starbucks), Carolina's Finest Lounge & Grill, a Crystal Coast gift shop, the Hope For The Warriors Military Lounge, free Wi-Fi, and the EZ Park electronic payment system. The airport is currently executing a multi-year Capital Improvement Program exceeding $70 million covering terminal expansions, hangar development, runway/taxiway rehabilitation, and additional parking.

OAJ generates revenue through multiple streams including airline landing fees, parking operations (hourly, daily, and weekly rates), terminal concessions (food, beverage, retail), commissions from six on-site rental car companies (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National), advertising placements, and general aviation fuel and service fees. The airport documents $612 million in total regional economic impact, supporting 3,805 jobs and $205 million in local payroll, though direct airport revenue is not publicly disclosed. The business model is essentially a public utility operating under government ownership with no parent company beyond Onslow County.
