Descriptiontext

Associação Brasileira dos Criadores de Zebu (ABCZ) is a Brazilian non-profit civil association, founded in 1919 as the Herd Book da Raça Zebu in Uberaba, Minas Gerais, and renamed ABCZ in 1967. It is the only entity authorized by Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) to execute the genealogical registration of all Zebu breeds in Brazil — Zebu breeds and their crosses represent over 80% of the national bovine herd. ABCZ serves more than 25,000 member breeders across all Zebu breeds (Nelore, Gir, Guzerá, Brahman, Sindi, Tabapuã, and others), supported by a network of more than 20 regional technical offices (ETRs) that conduct roughly 13,000 on-site member visits per year. The association was the first Brazilian livestock entity to earn ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications (2011).

The core technology platform is the PMGZ (Programa de Melhoramento Genético de Zebuínos) genetic evaluation system, which has integrated more than 18.2 million animals across three zootechnical tests (CDP, PGP, and Milk Control) and added 339,949 new animals in 2024 alone. Genomic evaluation has been extended to Nelore, Tabapuã, Guzerá Corte, Gir Leiteiro, and Brahman (launching August 2026), with 700,000 genotypes analyzed as of 2026 and a stated goal of 1 million genotypes and full Zebu coverage by 2028. Supporting infrastructure includes the proprietary PRODUZ herd management software (with a PRODUZ Fácil mobile companion), a public animal query portal, the PNAT young-bull evaluation program, the Pró-Genética state-government partnership, and the Integra Zebu sustainable pasture recovery initiative. ABCZ also operates computer-vision tools (real-time ultrasound carcass evaluation, and a nasal-mirror biometric identification prototype under validation at the Experimental Farm).

ABCZ's business model combines membership dues, transaction fees for genealogical registrations and DNA laboratory testing, recurring fees for genetic evaluations and PRODUZ software subscriptions (with up to 50% member discounts), event-driven revenue from three flagship fairs (ExpoZebu since 1935 with 200,000+ visitors annually, ExpoGenética, ExpoLeite) — including auctions, judging competitions, and technical courses — plus venue rentals at the 34-pavilion Parque Fernando Costa. Distribution is dominated by the ETR field-sales network complemented by the events and the online PRODUZ platform. Customers fall into three primary segments: purebred Zebu breeders, commercial cattle producers via PMGZ Comercial, and institutional/policy partners (MAPA, Embrapa, EPAMIG, Emater, state governments, universities).

Product overview1 text field

ABCZ operates as a multi-product platform organization offering genealogical registration, genetic improvement, and event services for all zebu breeds in Brazil. The core product is the PMGZ (Programa de Melhoramento Genético de Zebuínos), a genetic evaluation system that encompasses three zoo-technical tests — CDP (Controle do Desenvolvimento Ponderal), PGP (Prova de Ganho de Peso), and Controle Leiteiro — supported by genomic selection (genomic evaluations available for Nelore, Tabapuã, Guzerá Corte, Gir Leiteiro, and Brahman). The PMGZ is complemented by the PNAT (Programa Nacional de Avaliação de Touros Jovens) for selecting superior young bulls, and the Programa Carne de Qualidade for evaluating beef production systems. Supporting these programs are the PRODUZ livestock management software (with offline capability and a PRODUZ Fácil mobile companion app), the public animal query portal (Consulta Pública de Animais), the Pró-Genética program connecting buyers with registered bull producers, and the Integra Zebu sustainable pasture recovery initiative. ABCZ also organizes major annual events — ExpoZebu (since 1935), ExpoGenética, and ExpoLeite — and operates complementary programs including ABCZ TV (video content), ABCZ Revista (quarterly magazine), Museu do Zebu (heritage museum), ABCZ Jovem (youth committee), ABCZ Mulher (women's empowerment), and Zebu do Bem (social solidarity). The organization also provides venue rental services at Parque Fernando Costa. All programs are supported by a network of regional technical offices across Brazil and two ISO certifications (ISO 9001, ISO 14001).

associacao brasileira dos criadores competitors and assessment

Company assessment

Direct peers

  • American Brahman Breeders Association: U.S.-based breed registry for Brahman cattle (a Zebu-derived breed), operating a parallel breed-association model to ABCZ with genealogical registration, genetic evaluation programs, and member services. ABCZ serves all Zebu breeds in Brazil while ABBA focuses on the Brahman segment in the U.S.
  • American Angus Association: The largest beef breed association in North America, operating genealogical registration, genetic evaluation (AAA's genomic program), and member services for Angus breeders — a structurally similar breed-association model to ABCZ's PMGZ and registry, though focused on a different breed.
  • Holstein Association USA: U.S. dairy breed registry running pedigree recording, genetic evaluation, and classification services for Holstein cattle. Comparable to ABCZ's Gir Leiteiro dairy program and broader registry infrastructure, with similar non-profit breed-association economics.

Broad incumbents

  • CRV International: Dutch cooperative offering cattle genetics, herd management software, and AI services globally. CRV is a broader incumbent in cattle improvement that overlaps with ABCZ's PRODUZ herd-management software and PMGZ genetic evaluation offerings.
  • ABS Global: Global bovine genetics company providing AI sires, embryos, and genetic services. ABS is an established player in the cattle-genetics value chain that ABCZ partners with at ExpoGenética while competing on purebred Zebu evaluation.
  • Neogen: Animal genomics and food safety testing company whose Igenity line provides DNA testing for cattle breeders. Neogen sponsors ExpoGenética and competes with PMGZ on genomic testing services used by Brazilian breeders.

Regional players

  • Canadian Angus Association: Canadian beef breed association with registry, genetic evaluation, and member services analogous to ABCZ's structure. Operates in a different geography with overlapping breed-association economics but does not directly compete in Brazil.

Others

  • Embrapa (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária): Brazilian public agricultural research corporation that co-developed PMGZ with ABCZ and remains a strategic research partner. While not a competitor, Embrapa shapes the Brazilian genetic-improvement ecosystem in which ABCZ operates and contributes to scientific direction.
  • Sociedade Rural Brasileira (SRB): National federation of Brazilian rural associations. A peer ecosystem-level organization representing broader Brazilian livestock interests and interfacing with government on cross-cutting agricultural policy alongside ABCZ.

Emerging players

  • Associação Brasileira dos Criadores de Canchim (ABCCAN): Brazilian breed association for the Canchim composite breed, operating a similar but smaller-scale genealogical registry and genetic evaluation model. Competes with ABCZ for relevance within the Brazilian beef-cattle ecosystem, particularly in crossbreeding programs.
