What Bittners, LLC does
Bittners, LLC is a privately held interior design firm and custom furniture manufacturer founded in 1854 by German immigrant Gustave Bittner in Louisville, Kentucky. The company operates from its headquarters and showroom at 731 East Main Street, Louisville, and serves affluent residential and commercial clients on a national basis, with documented project work in New York, California, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Texas, Utah, Kentucky, Nantucket, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Its core offering combines full-service interior design with an on-site custom wood shop staffed by master craftsmen who produce handmade furniture pieces including chairs, dining tables, bureaus, headboards, bookcases, coffee tables, and wall panels using old-world woodworking techniques.
The firm's revenue model is project-based and quote-driven, reflecting the bespoke nature of both its design services and its custom furniture output. Customer acquisition relies on a consultative, sales-led motion centered on the Louisville showroom, an extensive online design portfolio, active social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, and editorial coverage in design publications such as House Beautiful and Sophisticated Living. The customer base is segmented horizontally between primary affluent residential clients (primary residences, vacation homes, full-home renovations) and secondary commercial clients (offices, restaurants, hospitality venues, and retail environments). Bittners has expanded its offering beyond design and woodworking into ancillary lines including a film production service for showcasing portfolio work.
The company is led by Chairman Laura Frazier and President & COO Douglas Riddle, the latter credited in company materials with reinventing Bittners into a nationally recognized brand. It is a privately held LLC with no disclosed institutional investors, funding rounds, parent company, or acquisition activity. The 170+ year heritage, combined with an in-house artisan workforce and a multi-service 'design campus' bundling design, wood shop, film, and philanthropic functions, is the central feature of the business model.
