What Talmadge Construction does

Talmadge Construction Inc. is a privately held, family-owned design-build residential remodeling firm headquartered at 8070 Soquel Drive, Aptos, California, serving homeowners throughout Santa Cruz County. Founded in 1984 by Jeff and Adele Talmadge, the company operates under a unified design-build methodology that integrates in-house architectural design, interior design, and skilled-trade craftsmanship into a single project delivery model, eliminating the traditional separation between designer and builder.

Core service offerings span kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels, whole-house remodels, outdoor living spaces, room additions, and accessory dwelling units (ADUs), with each project supported by in-house architectural design rather than outsourced drafting. The firm holds California contractor license 458607, maintains memberships in NARI, the Santa Cruz Construction Guild, and Passive House California, and has received regional recognition including a Remodeling Magazine BIG 50 award and Guildmaster distinction.

Revenue is generated through project-based professional services engagements, with custom quote-based pricing determined during initial 15-minute discovery calls followed by in-home consultations; customers are exclusively individual residential property owners acquired through direct-to-consumer channels (company website, phone, in-person) with a meaningful share of new business originating from referrals and repeat clients. Distribution is entirely direct, with no resellers, franchises, or channel partners, and operation is limited to a single regional geography in Santa Cruz County, California.

Direct peers

• HartmanBaldwin Design/Build: Claremont, California-based design-build remodeler offering integrated architecture, interior design, and construction for residential remodels and additions. Similar California-based, integrated-team design-build operating model.
• Case Design/Remodeling: Mid-Atlantic-headquartered, multi-location residential design-build remodeler offering integrated architecture, design, and construction services. Operates a fundamentally identical design-build model to Talmadge Construction at a much larger scale, making it the closest analog for business-model comparison.
• CRD Design Build: Seattle-area integrated design-build residential remodeler offering in-house design and construction under one team. Comparable peer operating in a different region but using the same integrated in-house architecture-and-build model.
• Jackson Design + Remodel: San Diego-based residential design-build firm serving Southern California coastal homeowners with kitchen, bath, whole-home, and addition projects. Closely comparable California coastal design-build peer with similar high-end client profile and project mix.
• Synergy Design & Construction: San Diego County residential design-build contractor focused on whole-home remodels, additions, and ADU-style expansions. Comparable Southern California design-build peer with overlapping service line and similar coastal homeowner customer base.

Emerging players

• Bath Fitter: Direct-to-consumer acrylic bath and shower liner franchise. Adjacent competitor for a narrow slice of Talmadge's bathroom-remodel demand via a faster-install product rather than full custom bath renovation.
• Kitchen Tune-Up: National kitchen-remodeling franchise offering tune-ups, refacing, and full remodels. Overlaps with Talmadge's kitchen-remodel service line but delivers through a standardized franchise system rather than integrated design-build.
• DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen: Franchise network of independent residential bath and kitchen remodelers. Overlaps with Talmadge's kitchen/bath core services through a franchise-driven operating model rather than a true integrated design-build team.
• Re-Bath: National bath-remodel franchise specializing in bathroom renovations with a faster, more templated delivery model. Competes for a portion of Talmadge's bath-remodel projects via a more standardized offering that does not match full design-build capability.

Broad incumbents

• Power Home Remodeling: Large Mid-Atlantic-anchored residential exterior and remodeling company with national reach and significantly greater scale than Talmadge. Overlaps on whole-home and addition work but operates a broader, higher-velocity sales-driven model rather than a boutique design-build.
